Painting over the bricks? A lot of people here would vote for not to paint. here is my mocking up with warm gray color for stucco parts.

I think you can use white, off white or a light taupe, but make sure those colors are warm colors, so they coordinate with the brick. Don't paint he brick! It looks like you have white mullions in the windows, which wouldn't work well with dark trim.

It’s a thing around in my city too, I can’t understand it. Take a low maintenance and beautiful exterior and make it monochrome and high maintenance. It was very difficult to find a brick home that wasn’t painted by flippers or well intentioned home owners.

Melanie - The key takeaway from Steph's comment is that the bulk of your exterior is currently low maintenance. Painted brick becomes very high (and expensive) maintenance.

IMO if you want to instantly devalue a beautiful home just paint the brick. If you wan to paint something paint the large gable and the bump outs in a nice sage green like the Tudor in the last pic. Get to work on some more interesting landscaping and get rid of the tall trees that are plant way too close to the house paint the siding at the back the same color.

@Celery. Visualization, Rendering images i checked and the millions can come out, so we could paint windows another color than white... which means we could also paint the trim. What do you think about trim the darkest color in the brick (a dark brownish gray) and the other areas a few colors lighter taupe? I like your photo above in taupe.

You need to be careful if the windows are vinyl and you want to go dark. You can learn more here:

You can go with bronze or brown/gray trim.

I know you didn't ask about it, but your very lovely home could use an upgrade in landscaping. Maybe start another thread.

The ball shrubs are a little odd, especially in such a large number. Even if you kept some of them, they need other shapes in between to vary the look. They're too low for the area to the left of the steps. The taller evergreens should probably get a trim before they outgrow their space.

I think the challenge you're having is that it's a lighter color brick, and not much of a tonal difference between that and the stucco/trim. My neighbor has a brick house and painted the door navy blue. It made a huge difference - really like it. What if you painted the stucko a darker color than the brick. Maybe Navy - so there would be more color than grey. I'm wondering if that would be enough to give it the pop/interest you are seeking without painting all that brick. If you do go Navy though I think you'd need white trim...

With that said, it's new brick which I don't mind seeing painted. If it was older 100 year old brick I'd say don't mess with that - that old brick is just so beautiful! And, I think a paint job on brick lasts better than on wood, but that's just an assumption I have - I'd ask the experts...

I think your house "as is" looks better than any of the suggestions you received. I rented a painted brick house about 20 years ago in Maryland. It tended to grow mold on it and had to be hosed off with chemicals to keep it clean. Definitely high maintenance.

You bought a brick house. Either learn to accept the brick as is, or sell the house and buy another. Big mistake to paint the brick.

The best accent color [for other than brick areas] with your red brick is a green. Accenting further, with dark window sashes, is an excellent suggestion.

Black looks great with brick

As joanbelforte states above, black would be a good choice for windows and especially if your other accent color on the larger areas was a green. That would be a classy combo.

I like the gray color on the siding parts, that Celerygirl posted first. Please do not paint that brick, its beautiful. I do have to agree with the others on the landscaping though. Those round ball shrubs are not very pleasing to the eye. I have never figured out, why people do that, and why they think they look good. Its a very nice looking house, just the way it is.

Sorry, just cannot understand the all-out negative attitude on painted brick. Yes, certainly older (and some newer) brick is quite lovely and shouldn't be painted, but hasn't anyone seen the hideous beige/brown or pink/brown brick? Some brick just isn't pretty, people! Lots of houses, at least in the South, from the 60s and 70s had that yucky brick, and they can really be brought into the 21st century with paint. That said, Melanie's brick isn't ugly, but I do think painting it would make for a more cohesive and uniform facade.

Please don’t paint your lovely brick! It’s hard to see this level of detail from your photo but pull a shade from the colors in your brick and paint the stucco a light version of that color. It should be a warm toned color, not cool like the gray above. As someone else mentioned already, some adjustments to the landscaping and a new front door would create more exterior visual interest than painting the brick and stucco.

Melanie - paint [or whitewash] the brick. You got excited when someone posted what you wanted to hear about painting it to make a "cohesive" look. You said all opinions are welcome, but I think you really just want confirmation for what you've already decided you've got to have: painted brick. So....do it.

Painted brick is super common in some areas, including mine (Georgia). No, it's not high maintenance, and no, you don't need a super fancy paint. SW Super Paint is what every painter I know uses.

I really like Option 2 of the painted brick mock-ups.

I like painted brick, though I only like them painted white or at most cream. It still has texture from the bricks but is lighter. Black for your trim is good if you go light on the bricks. It is classic. Then you can do a red door, or just about any other color!

Melanie, you're right, the limewashed or German smear look would be lovely. It's your home - do what you want with it! Painting or doing something else to your brick doesn't "ruin" it - it's still brick! And for those who believe it's just a trend, check your history - it's been done for a very long time.

When painting brick, make sure to use paint specifically designed for brick/masonry, not just any exterior paint.

Totally agree with partim...landscaping is outdated and too large in same places...I personally would make that change first...it will give you a whole new outlook on your house and may help you make the "to paint or not to paint"decisions...good luck!!
