entry way help!
I am about to start a remodel on a new home we are purchasing. It needs to be modernized with some paint, new floors and some updated furniture accents. I was originally thinking of a wide plank wood floor throughout (I love wood) but have thought that I would like to have a really dramatic and impressive entrance. Thoughts on doing a black and white checkerboard floor on a diamond pattern in the entry and then transition to wood floors right at the archway? Walls will be chantilly lace by BM (soft white). I am planning to redo the staircase at some point so don’t pay attention to that! Thoughts, ideas, suggestions welcome and appreciated :)

so, you want to jackhammer up all of that stone tile? (that's going to be some cost! )
there are so many cool things you could do. I'm partial to herringbone
your dark stairs w/white risers
and your checkerboard
would be cool if they could insert some wood inlay in your present tile

Comments (14)I’m feeling like I should have checked in with HOUZZers before ordering anything! You’re all sending me great thoughts…lesson learned. Since my move here, I’ve wanted a rug. But I love my floors (then why do I want to cover them?) …I wanted to add color. We’ve removed the old-world looking swivel chairs from the wine closet and put up our wine barrel (came from our home in fingerlakes wine region). I do feel that the entry is dark after the sun goes over the house and I wanted a welcoming feel in the foyer…thinking rug, table, lamp. A mirror would not reflect the gate because it would be in the same wall. The table I ordered is going to really fill that space and perhaps the scale won’t be right. The rug? I probably didn’t make the best choice on either. The rug should arrive this week so I’ll post pictures upon arrival. Table is going to take 16-20 weeks, perhaps I have time to reconsider or look for another spot for it. Please keep the ideas coming! Comments (5)Since you're replacing the roof anyway, instead of a separate house roof and a shed roof for the porch, create one roof slope in the front over a porch that is 6'-8' deep -- you'll want room for chairs and still have plenty of room to walk across the porch in front of the chairs. To the roof, you could add a couple of dormers centered over the windows on the main floor. That attic space by the dormers could give you upstairs space either as a sleeping loft or attic storage. Cabins and porches go together. Consider creating the new porch floor that is the entire width of the house and is located just below front entry door height. Then face the vertical wall around the porch with stone or brick. 4 years agoWow, that floor is already modern and beautiful. Painting the walls, furnishings, and new stair runner and lighting could be a nice update. That being said if you have your heart set on a new floor then go for it. This is an amazing floor for that wow factor. Congrats on your new home.
