Iowa Caucus night

Nana H

Watching the Florida satellite caucus. Fascinating watching the process. It's so unusual. Amy won first round, with Pete number two and Biden three. Will be watching this evening. Hope they have live pics of all the cacuses, it's truly fascinating.

Will anyone be watching the results tonight

I was a delegate for Jesse Jackson, then Gary Hart, back in the last year that Wisconsin had the caucus system. It's a very bad way to run a "primary". Chaos/anarchy.

We now have a primary and a caucus because the presidential primary caucus in 2016 had so many people they changed to accommodate everyone. With ours, you just checked off your candidate's name on a slip of paper and put it in a coffee can to be counted. No second or third ballots. Iowa's system reminds me more of ranked choice which I like. It looks like it could be fun if you keep your head, or miserable like Elvis's experience.

************************************

Things are not going as planned at the Iowa caucuses tonight. By now we should have had the results for the first round, and probably the second—possibly even the final results. But that's not what's happening. CNN's Wolf Blitzer summed it up succinctly just now: "Something's going on."

...No one knows what's going on at this point, but there are some reports that the app is not working correctly.

...Update: 11:09 EST: We've now learned that IDP [Iowa Democratic Party] officials have summoned the campaigns to an emergency meeting to explain the delayed results. This indicates that they're possibly dealing with a systemic, statewide problem rather than just a few precincts experiencing issues.

Letter from Biden camp, to the Iowa Democratic Party:

"I write on behalf of the Biden for President Campaign regarding the considerable flaws in tonight’s Iowa Caucus reporting system. The app that was intended to relay Caucus results to the Party failed; the Party’s back-up telephonic reporting system likewise has failed. Now, we understand that Caucus Chairs are attempting to — and, in many cases, failing to — report results telephonically to the Party. These acute failures are occurring statewide.

We appreciate that you plan to brief the campaigns momentarily on these issues, and we plan to participate. However, we believe that the campaigns deserve full explanations and relevant information regarding the methods of quality control you are employing, and an opportunity to respond, before any official results are released. We look forward to hearing from you promptly.

In Iowa, anxiety and unpredictability cloud caucus finish

New rules have also left the campaigns working in overdrive to set expectations. For the first time, the Iowa Democratic Party will release three sets of results: who voters align with at the start of the night; who they pick after voters supporting nonviable candidates get to make a second choice; and the number of state delegate equivalents each candidate gets.

The new rules were mandated by the Democratic National Committee as part of a package of changes sought by Sanders following his loss to Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential primaries. The revisions were designed to make the caucus system more transparent and to make sure that even the lowest-performing candidates get credit for all the votes they receive. But party officials in Iowa and at the DNC have privately expressed concerns that multiple campaigns will spin the results in their favor, potentially creating chaos on caucus night.

catkin: The long anticipated Des Moines Register Poll crashed and burned, too.

Catkin, I was just trying to run that down, because WaPo just mentioned it in this article a few minutes ago (archived link, to get past the pay wall:)

https://archive.is/HYhXy

WaPo: The irony on Monday night was that it was the second time in three days when the expected became the unexpected. On Saturday night, the Iowa Poll, long considered the most reliable pre-caucus indicator of the standing of the candidates, was pulled just before it was to be released after technical problems threw into doubt the reliability of the findings.

*********************************

Apparently that poll, the last one before the caucus, was pulled because of concerns raised by one person about a candidate's name that might have been omitted. (I read elsewhere the candidate was Buttigieg.)

The Des Moines Register, CNN and Selzer & Co. have made the decision to not release the final installment of the CNN/Des Moines Register/Mediacom poll as planned Saturday evening.

...a respondent raised an issue with the way the survey was administered, which could have compromised the results of the poll. It appears a candidate’s name was omitted in at least one interview in which the respondent was asked to name their preferred candidate.

https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/news/2020/02/01/des-moines-register-cnn-cancels-release-iowa-poll-over-respondent-concerns/4637168002/

Even if CNN/Register/Mediacom did the right thing to pull that poll, the fact that these two problems occurred one after the other, both obscuring or delaying results critical to candidates, will raise questions.

Did Buttigieg pay the app maker Shadow $21,000 for access?

Did Buttigieg's national organizing director Greta Carnes ever work for ACRONYM--Shadow's mother company?

So many questions.

02/04/2020 12:47 am ET Updated 2 minutes ago

This Is The Buzzy Democratic Firm That Botched The Iowa Caucuses

Shadow, a Democratic digital firm, created the app that was supposed to deliver quicker caucus results.

The tech arm of ACRONYM, a Democratic digital nonprofit group that has rapidly expanded in recent years, was responsible for building the Iowa caucus app that contributed to delays in reporting Monday night’s results in the first vote in the party’s presidential race. Multiple Democratic sources, including one of the presidential campaigns, confirmed the app’s creator.

State campaign finance records indicate the Iowa Democratic Party paid Shadow, a tech company owned by ACRONYM, more than $60,000 for “website development” over two installments in November and December of last year. A Democratic source with knowledge of the process said those payments were for the app that caucus site leaders were supposed to use to upload the results at their locales.

Good morning, America.

"Chapter I

Mr. Jones, of the Manor Farm, had locked the hen-houses for the night, but was too drunk to remember to shut the pop-holes. With the ring of light from his lantern dancing from side to side, he lurched across the yard, kicked off his boots at the back door, drew himself a last glass of beer from the barrel in the scullery, and made his way up to bed, where Mrs. Jones was already snoring.

As soon as the light in the bedroom went out there was a stirring and a fluttering all through the farm buildings. Word had gone round during the day that old Major, the prize Middle White boar, had had a strange dream on the previous night and wished to communicate it to the other animals. It had been agreed that they should all meet in the big barn as soon as Mr. Jones was safely out of the way. Old Major (so he was always called, though the name under which he had been exhibited was Willingdon Beauty) was so highly regarded on the farm that everyone was quite ready to lose an hour's sleep in order to hear what he had to say."

Democrats are the MOST INCOMPETENT know it alls!

Democrats FAILED to produce an impeachment with proper committees, proper votes, without proper subpoenas and witnesses, denied due process to the accused, and failed to prove a case of high crimes and misdemeanors, and now whine about the outcome of their failures.

Democrats FAILED to get the Obamacare website going and functioning after spending 5 BILLION taxpayer dollars--and it was ALL democrats that passed that fabulous legislation and broke promises to so many, including access.

A year of campaigning and millions spent by media and others and the democrats FAILED to even figure out how to count the votes, allowing all candidates to declare a win just because they said so and moved to New Hampshire in a flash.

And Democrats have the AUDACITY to want to take over major segments of our economy and tell us how to live our lives?

Take over health care?

Take over energy?

Take over education?

What hubris, from an incompetent and arrogant political party.

Who in their right mind would trust such a clown car of democrats with any part of their lives?

It's time for Iowa to come into the 21st century and switch to primaries. I was surprised to read that only 30% of voters traditionally attend the Iowa caucuses. It's pitiful that so few voters can make or break the candidates. They thought technology would be the answer to making the caucus more accurately reflect the population of Iowan voters. I'm not sure what went wrong but it seems some precincts weren't able to report their votes and we don't know yet why that happened.

"A Systemwide Disaster’: How the Iowa Caucuses Melted Down

Unexplained “inconsistencies” in results, heated conference calls and firm denials of hacking left the contest in a strange state of almost suspended animation.

DES MOINES — Sean Bagniewski had seen the problems coming.

It wasn’t so much that the new app that the Iowa Democratic Party had planned to use to report its caucus results didn’t work. It was that people were struggling to even log in or download it in the first place. After all, there had never been any app-specific training for this many precinct chairs.

So last Thursday Mr. Bagniewski, the chairman of the Democratic Party in Polk County, Iowa’s most populous, decided to scrap the app entirely, instructing his precinct chairs to simply call in the caucus results as they had always done.

The only problem was, when the time came during Monday’s caucuses, those precinct chairs could not connect with party leaders via phone. Mr. Bagniewski instructed his executive director to take pictures of the results with her smartphone and drive over to the Iowa Democratic Party headquarters to deliver them in person. She was turned away without explanation, he said.

“I don’t even know if they know what they don’t know,” Mr. Bagniewski said of the state party shortly before 2 a.m. on Tuesday."

I am sure the Dem candidates are heartbroken that they lost the votes of the gleeful Trump supporters!

No one else seems to care much and I suspect this will be long forgotten by election time.

"yet we’re the haters.

Today, I'm the laugher. No hate from me.

I'm not even fond of Trump, but I do appreciate a good comedy show.

The WAS a really, really big deal to the Democrats. Can't deny it.

Oh, this is nothing like what took place 3 years ago. If only we had the threads to prove the mean spirited one side poster attacks from ago.

Well, I can deny it. I'm a registered Democrat and this wasn't really a big deal to me. Not sure why the Trump supporters are so happy.

We care. We want the rightful winner to get his chance against Trump.

If nothing else this fiasco should put an end to caucuses. How unfair to the candidates and to the volunteers who devote so many hours to the process.

Told you so. Chaos and anarchy.

elvis

I was a delegate for Jesse Jackson, then Gary Hart, back in the last year that Wisconsin had the caucus system. It's a very bad way to run a "primary". Chaos/anarchy.

Has anyone seen Tom Perez?

Last I heard he was crying in a restroom at a greasy spoon diner somewhere in Iowa!

All the candidates love his incompetency, though because they claimed victory and live to ride the Clown Car another week!

Maybe someone will let him bus tables if can manage to get out.

I agree 100% that the people who support these candidates will indeed forget this entire fiasco in the wink of an eye.

They never learn.

Every time I glance at that comment I get an image in my mind from "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest"

Is Rubio expecting Russia or China hacking? We know Florida was previously tampered with.
