P and Q daylilies 2020

Let’s see your P and Q daylilies today. I was made aware of a recent weather fact for the Chicago area. Last year at this time we suffering with below zero temperature. I also learned we will set a record this weekend with no sunshine for nine days, not sure which is worse.

Now for the quote of the day: “ Ancient Egyptians used to worship cats and write on walls, a practice we still do today on the internet”.

Pardon Me blooms well with about four hours of sun. It’s growing near the base of 40 yo pine.

Pizza Crust had a great season, check out all of the buds. This photo is the truest color of the photos I took this season.

Peach Pizazz is difficult for me to get its true color, this is the best in a few years.

Purple Maze is new, I’m looking forward to a few more blooms in what will be it’s second full season here.

Peacock Maiden is getting established after a move.

Primal Scream is my favorite orange daylily.

Purple Paw Print got the blooming award this past season, 28-38 buds per scape and it rebloomed.

Pastelline is my favorite small daylily, I think it’s not widely grown

Sherry: Pastelline is a pretty colored small flowered daylily. I haven't seen it around much either. Your purple Peacock Maiden is luscious, and Purple Maze always looks intriguing where it's colors hold up.......Heather: Your R's are so pretty if just a letter or two early......I'll post a couple of mine.

A small flowered double daylily that was new last year and looked so cute to me:

    PENNY PINSLEY:

A Dale Hensley deep Mauve that I really liked:

    Palmetto Pride:

Purple Paw Print looks like a good one, I like one that actually gets that kind of bud count and reblooms too! Purple Maze always gets my attention. Heather, I quite like Regency Heights. Rock Solid is a great bloomer here, one I would not be without. It always has instant rebloom on all but the youngest fans, with triple scapes on some fans so it looks great in bloom. Maryl, I am not into doubles, but I really like the coloration on PENNY PINSLEY, and I love that rich mauve of Palmetto Pride!

    Palace Garden Beauty

Pandora's Box, I got rid of this one, just rarely bloomed that well here and I am not into those itty bitties, but it was cute

    Pandoras Treasure

    Parade of Peacocks

    Paradise City

Parrots of the Carribbean has done fairly well here

Party Pinafore is one I cannot say enough about. I moved it last spring, and that clump did not do as well as usual. I overlooked a couple of fans in the shade and may move the rest back because it always did so well there. It blooms later than specs say, and blooms continuously til very late in the season. I think it may be a bud builder because each year I think it is on its last buds, and a week or so later it has bloomed and still has some buds to go.

Photon Torpedo has not been stupendous here

    Pigment of Imagination

    Pink Cotton Candy

Now P is a really good letter. Look at all those beauties! Floota, we might know you would have at least one beautiful Q, Quasimodo huh? Okay, lets see: Philistine Champion (Thanks Rita!) Patricia Snider Memorial rebloomed twice for me last year: Peek a Boo: Possession of Obsession: Photon Torpedo: Persian Melon: Pirate King: Please Say Yes: Passion's Promise: Polkville Princess: Purple Maze: Pink Gingham: Parrot Jungle: Pink Pristine Beauty: Purple Honey Creeper: There are already at least a couple of pretty Priman Screams and Palace Garden Beauty pictures, so I will refrain from posting them again. This is more than enough anyway. kay

oh my,I started out, thinking these purples are gorgeous, but, then kept looking and they are all so beautiful, purples, reds and pinks are just gorgeous.be so glad when spring gets here, but, I have to get a new camera first. my camera finally gave out last summer at the very end of the season.it just wouldn't turn on any more, and I loved that camera so much.Rita of Long Island N.Y. sent it to me a few years ago,and I really gave it a good work out . Sure hate it that it just played out.I have never had one that wouldn't turn on no more, but it flat refuses to turn on.And I thought it took marvelous pictures, well, guess I learned very fast how to post a picture here,This was the last picture I was able to take with my camera before it gave up. gee, let me try that againwell, I do like this, can put in photos and not use photobucket no more.LOVE IT.

Nancy, Panic in Detroit starts mid-late and continues to bloom into August here. I don't think it's classified as a late bloomer but it certainly blooms at the end of summer. This one is a skyscraper! Very tall and very bright.....it can't be missed.

Brad, I hope Thomas Tew blooms for you this year. And, yes, it is interesting about that bed of mine. The only thing different about it from the rest of my yard is that a silo once stood on that site. I may get that soil tested this year. Meanwhile I try to put all my lilies that have “white” as part of their makeup in that bed. It is the bed where Stardust Dragon resides. I don’t mean to hijack this topic but here is Porcelain Ruffles (that I forgot to post under P) in that bed. It is “ivory with pink overlay” but always this shade in that bed! Now if I can just figure out how to get some of Celeste’s purple soil!!! :)

    a few more

Pleasing to the Eye did well last year after moving it. I have a clump photo of it, but that makes it look more red than the true color it is

I have had Pink Spider for years and years, something got to it and down to 1 fan now.

Good old Prairie Blue Eyes. You see I am posting every single P daylily I have LOL

Prelude to Panoply usually does well, not not that great last summer

Prickly Sensation does not like it here, died once and I got it again. Not sure it will make it this time but keeping my fingers crossed.

    Primal Scream

Purple Waters, an oldie that I keep thinking I have gotten rid of, but like Kwansa, keeps showing up

Passion's Promise has struggled for years, and I think it succumbed during our September drought. I love the look of it, if someone has one that looks similar that does well please let me know

Pawprints on My Heart I think I got this one fall of 17, it did not bloom til this year and did not bloom much then. I moved it in the fall so hope it likes its new location better. There were a few better blooms than this, but I did not have my camera

Pink Enchilada was new last year and bloomed pretty well, but very short so I hope to see better this year

Nancy, are you sure that was Pandora's Box? Doesn't look like mine didn [I got rid of mine too] nor like the pictures on garden.org. Mine was small but not itty bitty; it bloomed well enough but I got tired of it.

    Pastures of Pleasure

Prairie Blue Eyes, an oldie and goodie.

Paige's Pinata. Often very short. Finally moved it for the upcoming year.

    Peacock Maiden

    Pink Lantis

    Pony, o so cute!

    Primal Scream

Priscilla's Rainbow. Great eye, even better than the photo shows.

    Purple Riot

Prismatic. It makes great clumps. Individual flowers are not my favorite.

    That's all for me.

Good question Brad, but I think it matched stats and looks more when it bloomed the 1st year or 2 I had it. it was growing in too much shade and roots of a shrub. I don't think it was ever 4", but it was always growing near the shrub.

Brad, that’s a great Prismatic photo! I also like Pony, what a lovely bitone!

Maryl, two lovely daylilies today, how did Penny Pinsley hold up in your weather?

Nancy, Party Pinafore caught my eye, it would be a good addition here in my too shady gardens, sounds like a real trouper. I also like the delicate looking Pink Cotton Candy.

I really like Penny Pinsley. I like some of the small doubles. We added Pigment of Imagination last season but didn't see it bloom. It will be interesting to see it do its change this season. Pizza Crust is lovely too. It has a great edge.

Here are my P daylilies. I don't know if I have many Q's but if I have any, I will post them separately.

Pastor Z isn't well established yet, but the flowers are lovely.

Pat Garrity is my idea of what a red and yellow daylily should look like. Unfortunately, it is not very vigorous in our garden.

Patricia Ann's Calliopsis is one of my favorite bitones.

Peppy is pretty but it hasn't done much growing yet.

The cool temperatures at the beginning of the season made Perfect Pose's colors intense.

Pico de Gallo was a bonus plant. It's pretty but we are downsizing so it will leave this season.

Pretty Little Polly is a miniature daylily. Apparently it is frequently polytepal hence the name. The second picture is of the polytepal form.

    More to come . . .

Princess of Alexandria is one of our favorite Klehms. It's very hard to find and we searched for a long time for it.

Priscilla's Dream was outstanding last season. It's not my favorite color but the branching and bud count is great and the overall effect of the scapes is very graceful. It rebloomed and set some seeds too.

Puffer Fish is more vigorous than its sibling Heavenly Pink Fang.

Pure and Simple has been in the garden almost from the beginning of our hybridizing. We moved it from its original location (which was getting overshaded by a pine tree) and it has a new lease on life.

That's all of my P's. I will look for some Q's and post them later.

Many beautiful P's in these posts. So far, I'm the most taken with Peach Pizazz, Pleasing to the Eye and Pony.

    Pink Aloha

Pink Lemonade Party was the pink with highest bud count last year. It always reblooms!

Porterhouse was a new one last year.

Purple Passion's Promise was beautiful in its first year to bloom here. I hope it will increase well.

Purple Peace is a beauty, but it hasn't increased since I got it four years ago. It does manage to survive in a pot. I hope to get it in the ground this year.

    Princess Diary

    Promises Kept

    Papa Goose

Pretty Desirable has huge blooms and always makes a nice clump.

    Pink Extraordinaire

    I missed a couple of P's.

Puerto Rican Fence Climbers hasn't been here long enough to "climb the fence". It's supposed to be tall (Bob loves the tall ones and here's one that's not yellow), but hasn't reached its published height yet.

I didn't take the picture of Pumpkin Moonshine this year but I wanted to show it to you all. It's a great grower and makes a nice clump. It's not as fancy as some but because of it's great garden value, it will stay here.

I did find two Q's, the only two Q's we grow.

Quiet Wyatt is a nice soft color.

This is a picture from a couple of years ago. This is Quite the Bite that survives here. We keep it to breed with.

    That's all for me.

Pandora's Box has been in ground here forever. A testament to it's resiliency considering our climate and soil. A wonderful landscaping daylily that I've given many pieces of to people who saw it and loved it. We got over 60 inches of rain in 2019, and in this heavy clay soil for the first time, it struggled to even stay alive. Hopefully my two large clumps will come back this year. Here's my picture of one of the clumps when it was at full strength:

    Pandora's Box:

And another of it in the front border landscape:

I had to downsize my front border considerably a couple of years ago because I can't take care of it as I used to, but Pandora's Box has remained a steady player in the overall look. If I have indeed lost it because of our rain/soil, I will replace it. It's been that good for me............Maryl

Pure and Simple is as lovely as it's name implies..........Debra: Well, you got me at Pink anything. I knew you'd do "our" Pink Aloha. I so like mine. Pink Extraordinaire is eyecatching and Princess Diary is another sweet pink I like.........Heather: I enjoy seeing the oldie but goldie Persian Ruby. Such intense colors. Peggy Jeffcoat is a nice double named after a nice lady. Glad to see it........................Maryl

Brad: I think the plant you are referring to is Lythrum Salicaria "Morden's Pink". The species Lythrum is invasive in the wetlands, but the hybrid Morden's Pink has never shown any inclination to reseed or spread. Doesn't matter. The plant police have banned it along with the thug species Lythrum in many many states. Throwing the baby out with the bath water imo....... I wish mine would have reseeded a bit in the 30 years I've grown it. I can't find any new plants of Mordern's Pink locally or in mail order. However, I did see it listed for sale at a nursery in Kentucky once. Don't know if the nursery is around you, but it is named "Wallitsch". ............Maryl

Maryl, I agree with you about Pandora’s Box. It is a wonderful older lily that blooms later for me and blooms prolifically. I don’t usually get photos of it although I should. Nancy, your photo actually reminds me of some of the Siloams like Doodlebug or Ury Winnifred. I once had those and they were small. But, as we know, plants can look differently in different places so perhaps it was indeed just an underperforming Pandora!
