ceiling dilemma

We've removed an old plaster ceiling in order to update our electrical system & now it's time to put the ceiling back. I want to put in tongue & groove, painted white but can't decide on how to orient the boards. Most articles I've read say you should lay the boards perpendicular to the floor joists, which we can do but will require a little more work as we also have furring strips already in place from the old ceiling. Because of this, we could run them parallel too. My gut says that they should run the same direction as the flooring to draw the eye down the hallway but with the space already being divided by the arch, will you still get the same effect? Please help...I can't decide!!
