6 foot alcove, 5 foot tub
Comments (4)Thank you, everyone. I did a walk through with the construction supervisor and plumber yesterday and they voted for building the wall out along the edge so I'll have a one foot deep recess at the end of the tub. The plumber particularly said that he has redone a lot of bathrooms and pulled up rotten wood because kids get carried away and aren't careful about water spraying out at the end of an open curtain. Jejvtr, picture your niche area but with just a wall that lines up with the outside edge of the tub and leaves the rest of the area open so it can function as a seat or a wide shelf for products and bathing paraphernalia. We do have another bathroom that has an extra 6" at the end of the alcove and we're going to do something similar to your niche in that one. Heimert, I love your creative solution. If the construction was already done I would do that but I'm going for the permanent fix. Thanks...See MoreHow to organize (and live out of) a very small walk-in closet
Comments (8)well, if the rooms are large enough, there's always the idea of putting wardrobes, etc., in the room itself. And you might consider trying the Container Store's closet-design service--I think you can use their website to send them a closet dimension, and they can help you figure out Elfa storage systems to make it work. Is it possible to move the door toward center of the walk-in closet? Double rows are a pain, but hanging on one side and shallow shelves/drawers on the other could work very nicely--sort of a "galley kitchen" effect. Most design places will tell you to allow 24" for hangers w/ clothes on them, but you don't need *quite* that much if space is tight. well, no, wait a minute, I was thinking 48" wide, not 42". 42" is probably just the teensiest bit too narrow for that. My reach-in closet is a bit wider than the doorway on each side, so it's not much more than 42". That' enough for me, frankly--there are sections of it I don't touch. Give yourself a few minutes to really look at your huge walk-in closet now, and see how much of that stuff you really use, and how much is just there because you have the space. You could perhaps hang the rod in the back, and then where the FRONT rod would be, use instead one of those clothes racks on wheels, bcs it will slide from side to side when full. And you could perhaps make greater use of the side walls--one side could perhaps hold clothing rods (the Elfa system will let you put a rod in a place that doesn't have a side wall). And the other side wall could have shelving or maybe even drawers, depending how shallow they are. It means the stuff in the corners would be harder to get to--not impossible, but harder....See MoreEliminate walk In closet for bigger bathroom?
Comments (8)We were faced with this exact question when we renovated last year. Our closet is 5x6 so we can hang on both sides but our ensuite is the same size as yours. What we were able to do however was to borrow a bit of space from the main bathroom and enlarge the ensuite shower stall. The plumbing for the ensuite shower stall backs onto the plumbing wall for the bath/shower combo in the main bathroom. We moved the main bathroom bath/shower stall down 16" taking over some room of an underused hall storage space and then enlarged the shower stall. Our GC said that because most people are doing away with bathtubs in ensuites (at least in our area) that a larger shower stall is of more value and it allowed us to keep our "walk-in" closet. We still only have one sink in the bathroom and there is no doubt it is still small. In the room that was left in the hall storage we just put in a bunch of shelves for storage of TP, kleenex, lightbulbs etc. Our house is a 1972 post and beam and people don't expect grandiose ensuite bathrooms in them so we thought this was a great compromise. Don't know if any of this helps but it might....See MoreWalk in 7 foot by 4 foot shower
Comments (14)I have no design experience but the home we just bought has a 6x5 walk in double shower. We've been here 3 months and here's what I've learned about it. First, it is very cold. We are in Indiana and it's winter, we have a large window across from the shower and a skylight above it. It's freezing. The previous owner had it all open but I hung a curtain rod and shower curtains to try to keep the warmth in for winter. I recommend shelves at each end, mine has shelves at one end so we typically use that end bc it's near everything and it's cold to walk to the other side. Highly recommend one shower head being removable) handheld for cleaning the shower. I'll show pics of mine, the river rock floor was a surprise because I don't hate it as much as I thought I would....See Moreskmom
