What gives? Trump is trying to boost Bernie's profile?

dublinbay z6 (KS)

I've noticed recently the Trump team's sympathetic attitude towards Bernie. Couldn't figure it out at first--until I realized that the Trumpsters want Bernie to win the Dem. primary, as the excerpt below explains.

------------------------------------------

In a refrain of one of the themes of his 2016 campaign, Trump is claiming the Democratic Party establishment is conspiring to halt Sanders' candidacy, with the impeachment trial part of the plot.

"They are rigging the election again against Bernie Sanders, just like last time, only even more obviously," the president tweeted January 17.

[. . .]

Of course many of the Trump campaign's messages are negative — focusing on Sander's support for sweeping government welfare and spending programs that have long been considered too radical even for mainstream Democrats to campaign on.

But underlying both types of messaging is a strategy at play, sources close to the Trump campaign told Politico.

By talking about Sanders, whether sympathetically or negatively, Trump is trying to boost Sanders' profile and chances of being chosen as the Democratic presidential nominee.

According to the report, the president considers Sanders relatively easy to beat in a general election, susceptible to attacks as a radical socialist opposed to American values.

[. . .]

But some Republicans aren't so sure — and think Trump may be massively underrating the threat posed by Sanders.

[. . .]

"While Sanders may be a socialist, his populist brand of rabble rousing mirrors Trump, and could cut into the new Republican blue collar base," the Republican strategist James Barnett wrote in The Hill earlier this month.

One top congressional ally of Trump pointed to Sanders as perhaps the president's most dangerous challenger, saying he would be able to harness the anti-establishment anger that propelled Trump to victory in 2016."

So they think Bernie would be easier for Trump to defeat than Biden or Warren would be.

What do you think?

Just another attack on Bernie. So obvious. Remember, the "russians" fooled the crats in 2016. It looks like another country has been hard at work doing the exact same thing for the last 3 years. I would forget about attacking Trump...It's like trying to punch smoke. Very foolish and funny to watch.

I have thought that for a long time now. The rights sudden " affection" and " sympathy" for Bernie is quite transparent. We see it her. If he is nominated that will turn quickliy and brutally.

I don't underestimate Bernie's ability to bring out passionate voters but winning blue States by twice as many as before still doesn't win the election. A number of the crucial swing States must go blue. I worry Bernie can't win enough of them.

Trump and his supporters think Bernie is easier to beat than Biden and I worry they as right.

Trump would love to run against Bernie and we know why. Lots of people equate socialism with communism and Trump would make mincemeat of Bernie because of that.

Couldn’t find it with a quick search but I’m quite sure I’ve seen righties post that on this forum. Yes, pretty obvious.

I have stated that as much as I would loath Bernie being President, I would like to see where the country is really at.

Bernie the Socialist/Communist/ globalist against Trump the Capitalist/ America, country first.

Can you imagine if Bernie did win..... that would indicate that Bernie would have won in 2016 over Trump.

Hillary won't let that happen if she can help it.

Agree. I suspect "swing voters" tend toward centrist more than progressive and may be reluctant to vote Bernie based on their perception of him.

Biden is not my choice personally, but I think he may be viewed as a 'safer' choice by many. Especially perhaps by those who see DT as erratic.

There is only one problem with your theory, Lurker. Most Dems. rather like Bernie. So why would they try to destroy him?

That is why your comments make no sense.

And if Dems. will try to destroy anything Trump likes, why would say he is sympathetic to Bernie and thus encourage Dems. to destroy Bernie?

That doesn't make sense either.

You're just throwing mud at the wall, aren't you!

It's foolish for them to think that promoting Bernie will give Trump the election. This election is unprecedented and predictions based on past elections are worthless. I think voter enthusiasm for any one primary candidate will be less of a factor than in any election in recent memory. All we know for sure is that voting out Trump is the #1 priority for non-Trump voters. Whoever the Dem candidate is may not even matter.

It's glaringly obvious that Pelosi & company wish to keep Biden's competition off the campaign trail for as long as possible. That's not lost on most intelligent voters, IMO.

Just happened to run across this article. Right-on target for this thread!

-----------------

"Trumpworld torn over running against Bernie

President Donald Trump and his top political advisers were huddling in the Oval Office earlier this month discussing the state of the Democratic primary when they arrived at an increasingly pressing topic: What to do about Bernie Sanders?

Sanders was surging, and some of the Trump advisers were salivating at the thought of a self-described democratic socialist as their general election opponent. As the president listened, they argued for taking steps to elevate him in the primary to boost his prospects.

But others warned that Sanders wouldn’t necessarily be the pushover he might seem. They told the president, who was joined in the meeting by top officials including campaign manager Brad Parscale and pollster Tony Fabrizio, that the Vermont senator’s authenticity and populist appeal could draw some of the blue-collar voters who propelled the president to the White House.

With the Iowa caucuses less than a week away, Trump advisers and supporters are split over whether to wage an effort to bolster Sanders. . . .

[. . .]

Among those pushing for a pro-Sanders offensive is the anti-tax Club for Growth. On Monday, the pro-Trump group launched a TV ad in Iowa that attacks Sanders but does so in ways that could help him with Democrats. The commercial calls Sanders “too liberal” and says that he supports “liberal health care policies” and giving “government health insurance to everyone.” The spot also compares Sanders to Democratic heroes Barack Obama and Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and says he would spend trillions to combat climate change.

The Trump reelection effort, meanwhile, has spent much of the last several weeks focusing its attacks on Sanders. . . . The campaign has used its Twitter account as an anti-Sanders messaging machine and urged prominent surrogates to train their fire on him. Their working assumption is that the presidential attention will only boost his standing among anti-Trump Democratic voters.

[. . .]

Yet some of the president’s big-money backers say they aren’t interested in bankrolling an effort aimed at propping up Sanders. They worry his potential strength in a general election is being badly underestimated, much as Democrats wrongly discounted Trump four years ago.

The biggest fear about Sanders is that he could threaten the president’s monopoly on the outsider mantle in a way other Democrats in serious contention for the nomination cannot. Others express unease about Sanders’ energized following and worry that, as an unconventional, candidate he could inject an unpredictable dynamic into the contest. They, too, see potential parallels to Trump in 2016, when he attracted a wave of new voters.

[. . .]

“I’m of the school that says running against Bernie would be a gift,” said former Minnesota Sen. Norm Coleman, the national chairman of the Republican Jewish Coalition, a pro-Trump group that is expected to spend heavily in support of the president.

“In the end,” Coleman added, suburbanites aren’t “going to vote for a socialist.”

I've been aware that some Repubs. try to manipulate the system by pretending to be supporters of certain Dem. candidates, but I wasn't aware of how extensive the counter-plotting is. Some rich Repubs. are spending a lot of money to produce an end result for the Dem. primary that will benefit the Repub. candidate.

The FOX crats were just fear mongering about bernie.

"Vote for bernie and you'll lose everything. The house, the senate...Only biden can save you!!!"

Reminds me of what the republicans tried to do to Trump.
