Coffee Table shape dilemma
I have 2 - 96" wide sofas facing each other. I am planning on using these tables as my coffee table. Only problem I don't know whether to use the rectangular or square version of the table. Note - ignore the sofa in the right corner of the picture (not one of the ones facing each other will be removed) and I will be putting 2 small ottomans which will be adjacent to the coffee table and a console table behind them. I have roughly outlined both options for visualization.
Which shape do you guys think would be best?

Comments (7)Thanks @houssaon & @WestCoast Hopeful - I've pingponged between round and square for weeks. I think it may also depend on size - I could probably go a little bigger with a round coffee table. I'm just not finding one that looks nice but also reasonably durable. Thanks @Flo Mangan, that's a really interesting idea. I've wondered about using an ottoman (either round or square, back to that dilemma!) but figured it was a nonstarter because no one in my house would remember to use a tray. Comments (3)Totally depends upon your style -- more casual or more formal -- and your budget. Agree that round is likely going to be your best choice so you're not knee knocking and stumbling over the table ... but you might consider a round ottoman -- even a storage ottoman, either with a flip top for a table or, depending on the surface of the ottoman, to be used with a tray for a table surface. The price range is from "big box store" price to well over a thousand or more if leather. Something else to consider: add wheels in lieu of legs to either your table or ottoman so you can easily push/roll it aside as you want to stand up and/or move it over to where it is needed -- and out of the way where it is not. Comments (8)I like none above. Feel too light. Needs a balance -- visual weight, open, closed etc and a bit of Regency flavor if possible. Depends size and budget. : ) The nesting glass top rounds? 4 years agoI think the square shape is better for the coffee table, but you need to pull your sofas closer together onto the front of the rug so they are both close enough to use the coffee table. You can put the tall console table behind one of the sofas. If the room is symmetrical, I would put the console behind the sofa on the wall and keep the space by the window open. You can use the ottomans alone in the space across from the fireplace, which will also keep from blocking off the room. This example shows the console table on the wall side, and chairs instead of your ottomans.

4 years agolast modified: 4 years agoPulling sofas away from a wall actually makes the room feel spacious because you have some space and shadow behind.
My matching and facing-each-other sofas are 93" long and I have a 37" square coffee table between them. They are 23" from the coffee table, and yes, that is actually a bit of a reach to put down a cup or glass, but I prefer it because it leaves more room for people to pass by each other when the sofas are full of people. Maybe this picture will be helpful to you. I have different wall art and other furniture at the ends now, but still the coffee table and 2 sofas.
I do find my square coffee table is a bit too short, with the people sitting on the ends not as easily able to put down a beverage. The people sitting at the ottoman end of your sofas will have this problem, in your plan, consider getting a long long coffee table, and I wouldn't match it to the console table either. It's a little too "furniture showroom" and not in a good way. The ottoman or ottomans can go beside the fireplace. Or be sure the ottomans have trays so people can put things on them.
