Is this a good or bad idea for updating brick fireplace??
Comments (5)AM it's only available from the UK as far as I know. But some of the gallery participants are in the US. It's not the cheapest stuff but very long lasting and really the choice for what I want. I have been waiting for a sample. There are some other things which you could look at such as Keim paint or silicate mineral paint which is a compound that makes a petrified layer on the brick not unlike what Dyebrick does. It's not like a paint that scrapes off so it is good for standing up to the heat of fireplace areas. I'm not sure if I am going to be dyeing the mortar but with a careful hand you can use that product and get an almost new look. Make you look at the videos on the Dyebrick site, they show quite a bit. There are a few distributors of mineral paint in the US. One is Sydney Harbour which is a US distributor of Porter's Paints from Australia. Another is Eco-house out of Canada. I hope that is helpful....See MoreGood Idea to Paint Builder Cabinets after Closing in New Build Home?
Comments (30)On the topic of cabinet finish.. as many stated the finish from the manufacturer will far surpass an onsite paint job. It is true you seem to save if you paint yourselves, but through the upgrade option, do you also get internal upgrades? Is all the hardware soft close (hinges and drawers) Is your overlay a full or standard? Look up cabinet construction Another question -if you switched out cabinets after- is the countertop. If you plan on a solid surface, removing cabinets to switch out after the fact could be VERY expensive... 1- can the stone be salvaged, 2-If not you will have the cost of a whole new countertop! I also considered doing things to the kitchen after we moved in and opted out of that.. Boy was I glad. Life moves fast and when you move in you really want to move in. I'd go with builder and what you really want and avoid all the small surprises that will arise doing work after the fact. Good luck in your process!!...See MoreExterior help - paint full house, limewash brick, just paint siding?
Comments (10)@Zone4 yeah, I think I'm starting to realize that the brick probably helps break up the facade and keep it interesting. I'm starting to be really intrigued with the limewashing idea. If it turns out we could paint the windows, would you do black or white? I like the idea of a black/charcoal, but have also heard that is the worst color on vinyl windows. @aprilneverends it has been hard to really get the colors across from the listing pics. Basically it is 50 shades of unappealing (to me at least) tan inside and out. So I want a dramatic change, but I know people are really torn about changing brick, so I'll probably have my husband mockup a version with the brick and a dark greige paint to see how that looks alongside a limewashed version. Front door, yes, that thing has a big stain glass Texas star that doesn't help anything. I was thinking one of the modern doors with 3-5 satin horizontal lites to keep some light coming in from the door, then finding a complimentary garage door. For the French doors, I definitely won't change my mind on the divided lites - however they are just an overlay on top of a solid piece of glass, so one of the contractors said you could just pop them off. One set of doors needs a new handle, the other needs about $300 in repair work and weatherproofing, so that is why I'm debating whether or not to rehab these versus put in new ones. And if we replace, I don't know if sliding glass doors that let in tons of light or new French doors with the thinnest frame possible would look best. I know landscaping will have a huge impact too, and could really turn this into a more modern looking house. The bones are certainly good, and it is plain enough that we can subtly take it in a couple directions, just trying to narrow down what will look best while also being somewhat our style....See MoreAccent color ideas for orange brick home
Comments (6)Start with power washing the house, especially the roof, which takes up a large amount of visual space. The overall initial color impession is browns and reds. That's why your shed really doesn't blend well with the house. IMO, embrace your brown roof and the reddish brick and not try to go gray/blue. A light sage green might be a great compromise for trim. I wouldn't put shutters up at all. They don't particularly suit the house and it would save you some time and money to remove them. Paint the shed the same color as the trim you choose. As budget allows, get a landscape designer to plan extended garden beds in front to showcase your house with a mix of perennial grasses, shrubs, and flowering plants. That will do more for your house than the shutters and give you more visual pleasure....See MoreJudyG Designs
