Lettuce seedling gone overnight - I suspect snails
Comments (5)Heres my cure for a slug infestation- Grab a flashlight and a shaker of salt. Go on the hunt for them. Look under anything where they could be hiding in your garden. They love moisture and darkness to eat. (mine do anyways :P) If I find them, I either throw them down and squish them of sprinkle some salt on their slimy backs until they disinergate. (try not to pour the salt on as its bad for your plants.) Then when I get sick of hunting them, I take tuna fish cans and stick them all over where the slugs and snails like to hang out, and sink the can into the soil so that the lid is right at soil length. Then I fill them with beer and let the bug drown. I refill them after it rains, or every other day, because I get grossed out after seeing them in the tins. -Cassie...See MoreRefinishing wood trim...what am I doing here exactly..
Comments (13)I'm new to this thread but feel like this crowd might have the answers I'm looking for. I've got a 1918 Craftsman in Oakland, CA with virgin gumwood throughout the living and dining areas. I've spent the last 2 years stripping it (I've got little kids and a full time job). I was able to use denatured alcohol in only a couple of places, got fed up with CitrusStrip and settled on 3M safestrip but needed to strip each area twice to really get it clean. I'm just beginning to sand and realize I want to completely finish the window casings before we hit (hopefully) a rainy season. I've searched all over the web and keep finding partial comments on varnish, shellac, and poly. I'm very comfortable with poly from past smaller projects (mostly furniture). I like the idea of staying true to the original install and going with shellac except that I absolutely need better moisture protection than it will offer. Can anyone tell me why I shouldn't use poly? Can anyone point me to soup to nuts instructions on how to go from raw wood to finished product? Do I need to use anything like a primer? Help! I'm ready to roll but just have so little confidence in creating a plan....See MoreWhat zone am I exactly???
Comments (9)Nmfruit, there's a definite art to covering plants around here I see a lot of people do it. Although I don't have a lot of experience gardening, I think this area is not too bad partially because of the high humidity year round. I notice we don't get rapid fluctuations in extremes in temperature. My garden plot is at the foot of some small mountains, so I was shocked when I go up at night to garden how different the air feels there then outside my house. Sometimes there's a thick fog as well coming down. The Eureka lemon I mentioned was very interesting. I have a black 500 L water tank I put directly behind the tree. I then took two old windows to form a triangle on the front. I covered the open top with frost cloth. My idea it was that the tank would absorb sunlight, and radiate the energy at night. It would also create a freezing buffer, as water takes a lot of energy to turn into ice. I left the tree top open to allow rain, but mainly to allow excess heat to escape during sunny days as I didn't want the citrus to break dormancy. My idea is to have citrus survive and do well with no costly electricity or hassle. I saw pictures in a report from a guy in zone 6 I think who was able to have fruiting citrus by creating for walls out of clearwater tanks and putting an old window over the top. It never went below freezing inside of the enclosure, despite getting to 18 below or something outside....See MoreNot exactly what I ordered
Comments (5)Gee, I didn't know about the change of ownership! Glad I found out here. Here is the Made in the Shade Facebook page about the change of hands. I bought a lot of hostas over the years from Rob and consulted with him over the phone many times about something or other re my hostas. He always sent me nice plants and was always happy to answer questions, whether over the phone or email: It is with mixed emotions that I must announce that I am no longer the owner of Made in the Shade Garden’s retail/mail order hosta business. I was honored to serve you over the last 19 years. As of January 1, 2018 the new owner is Trey Rutledge. Please join me in wishing Trey every success. I trust you will afford Trey the opportunity to gain your confidence just as you afforded me that same opportunity 19 years ago. To avoid any confusion, I will be taking down my Made in the Shade Gardens Facebook page. You can continue to follow me on my new Made in the Shade Tissue Culture page. There I will try to give you a behind the scenes look at what goes on in a plant tissue culture lab and a look ahead of new hosta introductions that we are working on.
