roku and xfinity

got a new roku and put the xfinity app on it. took it too work and it does not connect. says you have to use the home network to work. ok, i assumed i needed the app to watch channels i like. but did some digging and see i can load individual channels on the roku and activate them 1 by 1 when i go online to that channels website. i have espn, amc, and best of all hbo all working now. so, i am getting what i really want? i just cant get the x app to work? and i dont really need it?

the info onlne and at the xfinity website say the app will not work away from your home network. but it stops there. it does not say you can still get the channels if you dont use the app?

If your mobile phone has a hotspot feature, connect your roku to it and try it out. It will probably work.

I think that when you set up you Xfinity it looks at & stores your home IP address. The other streaming channels you subscribe to don't care when you are. I had the same problem with Spectrum (Time/Warner) while on vacation. I could stream Spectrum channels to my phone and watch, but when I tried to cast to the TV it wouldn't allow it. At home I was able to cast from the phone to the TV.

We switched to satellite (ATT) a year or so ago because they offered fiber-optic internet, and we wanted that. It is not bundled with phone, but the bill for internet and TV is $126.00 a month. I've considered getting rid of the TV part, but that would only save me $35.00 a month - I got the barest minimum channels and made sure that it has NO extra sports channels on it. If I upgrade my TV at all, all the sports channels get added in, plus a $15.00 a month payment to some football sports organization, and I do not want to give them a penny. We also have antennae that look like sheets of paper, and with those, we can get 127 local channels, about one third of which are in English. We get seven or eight local Armenian channels, not to mention Korean, Thai, Taiwanese, Philippine, Russian, Spanish, etc. We do want a lot of TV on the local channels, as they are not included in the cable. My brother pays the cell phone bills, and so I don't know what that is, but he said it only cost $10 a month to add me to his plan. We have pretty much no problems with the satellite, as our weather tends to be clear. We no longer have a landline. We only used it when our parents were alive. I will probably cancel satellite when my two year contract is up. However, I do like the DVR that comes with it, and that's what I use the most.

When I switch from antenna to HDMI I get a menu displayed from the Roku. The menu lists Amazon, Pandora Hulu, Netflix, Plex, and about 10 other streaming services. I use primarily Amazon (free with Prime), where many shows and movies are free, while others require payment. The Roku has similar buttons to a VCR remote, so you can stop, start, and pause any show or movie you select. I also just set up a Plex server on one of my PCs, and was able to access it from my Roku. Since my son has made a digital copy on the PC of many of our DVDs (ripped), to take on a laptop when we travel, I am now experimenting with accessing my movies using Plex from my Roku. Overall the setup seems fairly simple, although I have to leave my PC on to act as a server. Plex also allows streaming of music, but I haven't tried loading anything from my own CDs yet. Bruce

Oh Mary, yes I did. Couldn't decide to tell you the long or short story. Thank you for caring. I was looking for Acorntv right? I went to Apps on my Samsung and it was not with Netflix and the other few apps that came with the television. Chatted with Samsung and my television does not support Acorntv. Saw an ad for Acorn on line and filled out the info and got to the part where I was free to write on the form. Asked how I can get this app since Samsung told me my television serial # doesn't support it. No answer. Filled out the Acorntv subscription form again and complained about them not answering and updated my request to call me. "I am on a major forum and I will provide them feedback." Meanwhile, I went to my X1 XFINITY button on their remote and pushed it. I use some tabs on it every day. Went through all the tabs: Guide, On Demand, Search and Apps. Looked at Apps again. ACORN is not there. Went to Search. ACORN is not recognized. Never used On Demand before X1 and new television. Found buried in Xfinity' s On Demand tab, a couple of rows down wasACORNtv app. Signed up to see what that would do. At the same time ACORNtv called concerning what I wrote on my form and listened to my story. They called back and said I was now subscribed to two places: Acorntv Direct ( which needs Roku) and Xfinity Acorntv (doesn't need Roku) Same Acorntv. Same price. Lovely woman said she would take me off of Acorntv Direct and let me be billed through Xfinity. Any questions or comments?

We have Comcast Xfinity as my DH loves tennis. We pay almost three hundred. We also have Apple tv, firestick, and many others. I never watch tv until 8 at night. Then I watch a good movie, usually foreign. Because I am deaf with an implant and two hearing aids, I can only use CC as I can't understand a word when the people talk over each other so that limits my t.v. time. I'm actually ok with that as I accomplish more by myself in my studio plus doing chores. My daughter just gave me a home pod and I love it. I can turn the music up to the max and hear it yet, even then, I limit myself. Oh, and with the home pod, my 3-year old great grand Dylan and I can dance all over the place lol. It's the best feeling. We have Spectrum in Maine but we can't go yet as they closed down to out of staters.

Correct, everything works on your mobile devices, but it blocks you from casting that onto a TV. Basically, they don't you to login to your account on someone else's device and give them the ability to watch tv via their services without paying for it. That's why it works on your home network, and not outside of it.

However, the individual apps may work where the xfinity apps do not.

What is a Roku? My TV says Roku, but it's a streaming service, so I don't know what "a Roku" is. It has nothing to do with my phone.

@mtvhike Roku is a streaming service. While they are built into some newer tv's, they also sell stand alone streaming players which is what the op is referring to. More info: https://www.roku.com/

my Roku works away from home. I can take it to work or across country on vacation. Easy peasy but the x app won’t work away from the home network. The individual channels do work fine. I could split hairs and say hbo won’t work using the app but hbo-go works fine away from home

Steve, yes I know Roku is a streaming service, but what is "a Roku"? A TV with Roku written on it? A USB stick with Roku written on it?
