Why Is My Dracaena Suddenly Growing Again?

Hi all!

When I was in middle school I bought a Dracaena marginata from Walmart. It was maybe a foot high, and I put it in a new pot when I got it home. It grew very nicely, and after a year I put it into the pot it's in now, without rinsing it off and changing the soil. It was seriously rootbound, so I loosened them up a bit before replanting it. That was 5+ years ago, and after it was in the new pot it never noticeably grew. It would still wilt slightly when it got thirsty and perk back up within a few hours after watering so I knew it was alive, but it always looked exactly the same (minus some leaves that fell off from old age).

Today I glanced over at it, and I noticed that it was suddenly six inches taller than I remember it being! It used to be a few inches shorter than the schefflera next to it, and now it's a little bit taller. I'm not the most observant person in the world so I don't know when that growth happened, but I'm fairly certain it was in the last six months since I looked at it a lot over the summer and I don't remember anything new happening at that time.

The perplexing thing is, nothing has changed in its part of the world since I put it in the new pot all those years ago. Same location, same amount of light, same watering routine (it gets heavily watered when it starts to look droopy), same pot, same soil, same rocks on top of the soil... The only variable is the temperature outside, since it's right next to a sealed window and slightly protected by some old curtains that are never opened.

What could cause seemingly random growth like that? I'm delighted that it's grown, but I'm curious as to why it happened after so long without any visible growth. I was also thinking of repotting it and replacing the soil, in a pot that has drainage holes since its current one doesn't. Should I still do that? It's apparently doing OK in its current situation, as is the schefflera in an identical pot with identical soil and rocks that I'm also considering repotting, and I really don't want to risk hurting my plants if it's not necessary.

Thank you all for your thoughts! Sorry for the backlit picture, apparently the only devices in my house capable of taking pictures only have auto flash that won't activate with this much light.
