Island range hood/venting advice needed
Comments (5)The vent hole is where the current vent recirculates the air back into the room? Then it's not an exterior vent. It's just an interior loop that does you no good. And yes, the condo board most surely DOES have say as to how you punch holes in your exterior. Start by asking your neighbors what they have done for ventilation. And then get an HVAC expert in to examine the situation before you get too far into the design phase. Once you get their recommendation, you can approach the condo board about alterations to the unit's exterior. Good luck! Most boards aren't that willing to work with you on something like this....See MoreHelp with island vent hood venting through side wall
Comments (2)The stress on the roof beams should be least at their ends, so the amount of structural enhancement needed to allow a roof penetration for a horizontal duct near the hood height should be less than for penetrating higher on the roof. You might want to consult with an architect who can engineer a solution for that location. I can't help with any illustrations, although you might check out Soler & Palau's web site. I vaguely remember that they had some unusual duct runs shown there. kas...See MoreVent-A-Hood Ductless ARS range hood Update
Comments (198)With conventional hood systems, the expectation is that the larger particles within the entire grease particle spectrum are collected by the baffles, and the smaller particles are ejected into the outside air, with only modest condensation or impact collection by the duct. To deal with the entire particle spectrum with a filter pack is a challenge, and probably unaffordable in cost for most residential users. If the Amazon rating is based on comparison to outside venting, the result above might be reasonable. As a commercial example, the Wells WVU-31CT filter system is described below: "Filtration Completely self-contained filtration process reduces emissions below that allowed in NFPA 96 and ANSI UL710B using the EPA 202 test method and includes stainless steel grease baffle filter with grease cup, fiberglass pre-filters, high-efficiency (Particulate Air) filter/ carbon-charcoal filter pack. All filters are easily removable with out tools. Air flow sensors continually monitor air flow optimizing performance and grease removal while an interlock system will not allow cooking appliances to function if filters are missing, clogged or in the event of a fire." About $18k. Electric surfaces only....See Morejoist in the way of island hood vent
Comments (11)I don't know about your structural issues but I researched the range hood aspect of this for my remodel and this is what I found out. Don't get scared by these custom range hood people. You can get a hood insert and have a carpenter make a wooden frame in any shape you want. I have a joist in the way of where my vent should go. My vent will come out of the ceiling to the side of the center of the range hood. It will turn slightly to one side then, come straight down. My range hood cover will be shaped slightly wider at the top, narrow in the midddle, then wide at the bottom. The insert will be supported by a plywood box, made by a carpenter. It will be attached to the ceiling with metal bars that will be attached to the ceiling joists. The beautiful curvy shape of the range hood cover is only ornamental, not structural. The venting can follow any shape it need to within the range hood cover. Others on this site have made thier own range hood and got very creative with them. This might be an opportunity to make your hood distictive....See MorePatricia Colwell Consulting
