I would not paint those, personally. You say they are well-made and the wood is beautiful. Can you update the counters,lighting, backsplash, flooring?

I appreciate the perspective, the look is not something we are interested in keeping so it will have to change. The whole house was original 70’s so that took priority over the kitchen when we bought it. 4 bathrooms, several structural changes and a finished basement later we are ready to tackle the kitchen.

Are you at all interested in perhaps changing the wall and/or trim color? That would open up many more possibilities.

I would say, decide on the overall look you want first. The counters would be the biggest chunk - light, dark or medium (like, steel gray)? Granite, quartz, quartzite, soapstone, corian? You can coordinate paints to the counter much more easily than vice versa.

Are you envisioning light/white/cream painted cabinets, or in a color (I love soft greens and blues, and even navy and teal), or a gray palette to coordinate with the current trim? I've seen kitchens done in a mushroom shade that were beautiful too.

Once you figure those two things out, then we can make suggestions for some particular paint shades.
