We just remodeled our guest bathroom and installed limestone subway around the tub. We had planned to install a glass panel on the side but delayed because we were
already over budget. I just put a shower curtain rod up to use in the meantime. It was up for a couple of weeks and took it down to lower it and noticed it appears to have stained the tile. Any ideas what caused this? I’m afraid to put a curtain rod up now. Can the stain be removed? Or do we just need to have the tiles replaced? Thanks!

It’s limestone. Very very porous. Your rod held in the shower moisture. Mold formed, and stained.

I don't want to drill into the tile either. The tile can crack and it is not guaranteed that won't be a problem. My fairly expensive tile is apparently 'delicate', at that, according to the tiling company. Besides, I might want to do glass doors at some point and wouldn't want to end up with extraneous holes showing. I believe I have seen that where there are old holes showing. I have a tension rod which has been working fine. It adjusts quite tightly by twisting the multi-piece rod. No labor expense or need to schedule time off from work either. It's a completely flexible installation which is always a plus with me. The curtain is not heavy though.

I put a tension-curved rod up because I wasn't sure if I'd want a curtain or glass sliding doors on my tub after a redo. I bought this rod as a trial balloon to help me decide if I really wanted to go with a curved rod and drill into my new tile. I've never replaced it. It's never so much as budged, and my tile is intact if I ever decide to change my mind. I also mounted it high for an extra-long curtain liner. If you google 'curtain rod for clawfoot tub', different options pop up. There's a brand I bought from before but I think they went out of business.

Oh boy!! I am going to have that rod put right down on those Swanstone walls asap. So glad for your info. Thanks so much! What a help you were. I am 100% wheelchair dependent and really was fretting about how to remedy this. A couple of years ago when I had the bathroom rehab done, I had frameless shower doors installed. Was ok for a while because I could get into the shower without transferring....just holding onto shower bars and such. My condition progressed until I could only access shower by transferring from wheelchair and the sliding glass doors did not give me enough room to safely transfer in and out, so I had doors taken out and went to the shower curtains. Works much better!

Yes, when you remove the rest of the sponges on the wall, the mold will go away then.

Bummer! I would start with a neutral soap and a scrub brush first and see if that helps.

Then move onto onto something like Aquamix Poultice for natural stones.

It’s porous limestone. Far softer and more porous than marble. Marble is metamorphisized limestone. It’s harder and less porous. And it has HUGE issues with chipping, staining, scratching, and etching. Limestone will just have multiple repeat performances. Accept it for what it is, and how it behaves. Or remove it and do something else.
