I totally agree with Ida! It works perfectly with the other woods. I would be more inclined to change that tile.

I love the way it works with your trim, but I feel like it is heavy. I would paint just the area around the mirror so that it creates a more balanced look.

That's an Antique tiger oak mantle/surround, prob from the early 1900's.

I would remove it. Completely. Sell it to a Architectural Salvage/Antique place. (You'd prob get a decent price for it)

it belongs on a Craftsman or Victorian type of fireplace. (is your home from that era?)

They come off pretty easily. You could also just remove the top portion and sell that. Before I'd paint, I'd think about redoing that tile and getting a completely different mantle that suits your decor.

I'd do a solid black or marble piece for the floor hearth, and something else for the surround. Don't know what your style is though.

If it was mine I would remove the top piece but other than that I would need to see more of your house before having any idea about painting it. Right now I would say no to painting it will look cheap IMO

I would remove the top half, too. And change the tile. The stain color appears to work well with the color of the other trim in the room as well as the floor. The gray & white tile isn't working.

Re" It does not match anything in the home" Im not sure what you mean by this? On my monitor it looks to match the woodwork and in the mirror I can see pillars and other trim. Are the shades of stain mismatched? If so those could be made to be more congruous throughout.

Typically older houses would have the higher quality wood (your maple and oak) in the more public living areas,while the utility areas (ie kitchen and bath) might be painted and the upstairs bedrooms either lower quality wood or painted wood. I would stick with this motif.

When was this house built? I was going to guess 1920s-30s due to the narrowness of the trim & deco light fixture (they would have still used more traditional looking woodwork - often old houses are combinations of various fashions of the day - much like houses built today). But now Im not so sure - ceiling looks kind of low? Would be interesting to know the history of this house

I would consider changing wall/ceiling color before going any further - wood often looks better with more substantial color on the walls to balance out the heaviness of the wood. I think it would helpful OP if you were to locate designer(s) whether local or online who love old houses and know how to update and freshen while incorporating and working with the original highly desirable features. The two are NOT mutually exclusive !

We have one snapshot of the space which is heavily "wooded" and the mirror reflection shows even more wood with columns and a wide header in a 3rd stain plus art in a dark wood frame. Do you have a lot of wood furniture pieces as well? The detail in the floor may tie it all in, but based on the snapshot, I'd be more inclined to lighten the load by painting the baseboards, doors and frames in a shade of white.

No, I wouldnt paint it, its gorgeous. I dont understand where you think it doesnt match either. It obvously matches the rest of the trim, that we can see. If you dont like it, then take the top off, carefuly, and store it carefully, so that some day, someone else can put it back if they choose too. Its a big feature in your home.
