Here I go again! Have any of you made soap at home?
Comments (2)Hi Richie/Abi here. My hubs Gary tried soapmaking one year for his Christmas craft project. I think he got his ideas from a book from the library. He wound up making and giving these great soap rounds with loofah in them. He bought the soap supplies from a craft store like AC Moore. (check their class schedules, they may offer a class). My mother and grandmother used to make soap every year for laundry washing and housecleaning! They taught me how. It involves rendering pounds of animal fat and combining with LYE and a lot of cooking. It smelled horrid and hurt like the dickens if you got splashed. They always cooked it outside on a fire. I always begged to be sent to summer camp that week. The stuff sure did get stains out though. /Abi...See MoreHave any one made stitch markers on a limited budget
Comments (13)The dental rubber bands are a good idea but sorry I don't have access to them since my children are grown up. The scrap yarn I tried before and they didn't work great for me. The sweater has a needle size of 9 and 10 but I will not be using those sizes. I have to step them down several sizes to be able to make the pattern fit my son. He is a very petite 32 year old young man. He weighs only 98 lbs on his heaviest day. His growth from birth was affected by kidney disease. He was not a premature baby but weighed only 3 lbs 7 1/2 ozs. He was only 17 1/2 inches long. He was been small his entire life. At age 9 was when he finally bumped his head walking under the dining table at my mom's. When he was old enough to start school, he had to be picked up and placed on the buses' first step to go up the steps into the bus.He had to have a kidney transplant in 2000 when his right kidney failed. His kidneys were abnormally small and only worked at the rate of half of a normal size kidney. When he buys clothes for himself he shops in the boy's department of the stores. The only problem the clothing is not appropriate for an adult with the designs and styles that are there. when he and his brother were younger, any out grown clothing was a "Hand me up" instead of a "hand me down'. When he went into kidney failure his remaining kidney contiued to produce urine but the toxins the kidneys eliminates from our body, continued to build up in his body till they almost killed him,He was less than 24 hours away from dying in his sleep when he finally went to a Dr. The only reason he went was he passed out at his job and they sent him home with the instruction to not come back unless he had a Dr's note stating why he had passed out. Young men who are in their early twenties do not pass out for no reason. My son said he didn't feel sick when in fact he was dying from the inside out....See MoreHave any of you made Arroz Con Pollo?
Comments (5)I'd recommend Sol's recipe. There isn't anything she makes that isn't great. Arroz con Pollo One 3-pound chicken, cut into 8 pieces 2 tablespoons olive oil 4-5 cloves garlic, minced 1 medium onion, finely chopped 1 red [or green] bell pepper, finely chopped 1 teaspoon dried oregano 1 teaspoon toasted ground cumin 1/2 cup dry white wine, or dry Vermouth 1 cup beer 1/4 teaspoon Saffron 1/4 cup tomato paste or 2 tomatoes, peeled, seeded and chopped 4 cups chicken stock 2 cups short grain Valencia rice * 1/2 cup frozen petite pois 1 bay leaf salt and ground black pepper to taste chopped, drained pimientos are typically used for garnish Perejil (parsley), or fresh oregano can also be used to garnish this dish, but it is optional. Heat the olive oil in a large heavy skillet. Season the chicken with salt and pepper, and cook the chicken pieces until golden, but still pink inside. Transfer the chicken to a platter and pour out all but 2 tablespoons of the fat. Add the chopped onion, chopped bell pepper and minced garlic to the skillet. Cook until onion is translucent (not brown), about 7 or 8 minutes. Stir in the rice until it is well coated with the oil, and cook for a few minutes, until the rice grains begin to look opaque. However, don't let the rice take on color. Add the chicken stock, cumin, oregano, white wine or dry Vermouth, beer, saffron, tomato paste, bay leaf and salt and pepper to taste. Make sure this mixture is fairly salty because the rice will absorb quite a bit of it. Preheat oven to 350ð F. Stir ingredients to combine and arrange chicken pieces on top. Bring it to a boil, uncovered, until most of the water is absorbed and small craters form on top of the rice, about 20 minutes. Remove from the heat. Gently stir in the petit pois. Cover and place in the oven until the rice is tender, about 20 minutes. You could finish cooking this dish on top of the stove, covered, over medium heat, but the rice will cook more evenly in a moderate oven. Garnish Arroz con Pollo with finely chopped pimientos. Yields 4 generous servings. Here is a link that might be useful: Arroz Con Pollo...See MoreDo any of you still have any antique flower oil paintings in LR
Comments (12)I bought this one several years ago at a consignment shop. I hated the finish on the frame, but knew I could fix that problem easily. Here it is Before. It was done in a weird Shabby Chic attempt with blue in the crevices, but the carved wood frame was a nice one: Like you, I had to first figure out what would compliment the picture and work in the room . . . although complimenting the picture should always come first. I thought that an Old World look would work best with this classic print. I painted the outside 3 borders a deep rich brown. This is just acrylic craft paint, BTW. I then used a Raw Umber wash over the outer two, allowing it to stay in the crevices of the second border's carvings. I knew that I wanted the inner frame edge to be gold, so I painted that and then used gold Run-N-Buff on the border next to it. This was a good segue to the gold inner border, IMO. I can't find the rest of my pics that I took as I painted and then antiqued the frame, but here's one of the last steps in my process. After this, I just antiqued the gold inner border with a brown antiquing wash and it was done. The bottom line is that you can use the small bottles of acrylic craft paint, glaze and antiquing medium to easily get what you want on pretty much any ratty or wrong colored frame. I had enough art already on our walls but, with our high ceilings, I wanted to hang something over the doors in our family room. I found the plates after that to hang on either side of it. They're not that orange IRL, but more of a soft amber color. The camera's flash bounces through the glass, off the cream wall behind them and always makes them look like that in pics!
