I use galvanized wire that's meant for electric fences, cheap and meant for use outdoors. Never yet had a wire fail because of weather exposure (weedwackers are another story, however.) My wires are about 18" apart in between boards of a 4-board pasture fence, with the first one being about a foot or so off the ground. When the rose(s) are more mature, you won't use that bottom wire much, but it's necessary in the beginning to get those new baby canes off the ground. Training ramblers and climbers this way is my favorite ... it's easy to go horizontal, almost espalier, and the flowers are more at a height where they can be enjoyed. This said, there's also something pretty wonderful about climbers and ramblers trained over your head (into trees, even).

We have several persian rugs, of various sizes. We have moved around a lot with the military and lived in many houses, so at times rugs remained rolled/wrapped up because some rooms were just too small for the 9x12's. For the larger rugs, if you have hardwood floors, it is pleasing to the eye to have at least an 18" border. Depending on the size of the room and your seating arrangement, the border can be a little or a lot more. Large persian rugs don't suit being placed on wall to wall carpeting IMHO. Remember that beautiful rugs and carpets are artwork for your floors and need to be shown off. A wood/tile floor makes a lovely backdrop for them, just like a nice frame and matting sets off a painting!

Well I am going to add this and before you all get the EEEWWWW factor going I had a plan. Remember I said I made the master bath large for when we get older and might need help in the bath for all sorts of things. Got to measuring the room this morning and it is 8 1/2 and a little by 12 1/2. The one end has vanity and shower. The other is open space if I removed the furniture. It would be possible to place a twin bed in there. With folding screen around the toilet. That side of the room is 8 1/2 by 8 1/2. Toilet is in corner against shower wall. I know it would seems a bit weird and yes it would be but consider if a person were having trouble getting up and down or over to bath room. Our master bedroom is 14 1/2 by 12 1/2. This would make it easier and close and with the folding screen you would not be seeing it or have it in your face kind of thing. There is a nice opening window and the room is light and bright. There is a door to outside from the room if one of us needed to be transported to the hospital. I guess I am considering we are all we have for each other. We have no kids or family to help. We really hope to stay in our home as long as possible and care for each other. Although it is not the ideal situation. It is a way to make something work if needed. I know if I had trouble walking it would be a situation I could live with and be grateful for. Thinking grab rail on the wall between bed and potty. Also remembering back when I was a kid with fractured pelvis. Laying in bed and having to get to the bathroom to pee. The room I had had an attached bathroom. And in reality I bet it was only 10 -12 foot to the toilet. But with the pain I was in it might as well have been a mile. The upside was the person that owned the house before my family was in a wheel chair and there were grab bars in the bathrooms. They are wonderful things when a person needs them. People put those potty chairs in bedrooms all the time.And this would have the advantage of no added clean up the sink to use too. Soooooooooooooooo This goes back to how large a room or space is needed for guest room. Well 8 1/2 is enough for a twin bed. Would be small. And again my sewing room guest room is 9 by 13. Chris

Looks about the right size to me--so long as this is a plant that can colonize the bottom part of that super-deep pot. But what about the roots growing out of the bottom of the pot, you ask--don't they need more room? Won't a small pot stunt the plant's growth? Shouldn't I plop it into a bigger pot and surround it with nice fresh soil? Well, because the roots are congested, the plant needs a full repotting, including removal of all the old soil, reduction of the root mass and a badly needed root pruning to get rid of thick roots and the ones that go in the wrong directions, and replanting it into (probably) the same sized pot with an aerated fast draining soil. After the roots have plenty of room to run and air to breath, your already lovely holly should really take off. For most plants, repotting should wait until the summer, but the timing is different if your holly goes dormant, so hopefully a tree person will pipe in. I could be wrong about the pot size; maybe this plant grows at an insane rate that would let the roots colonize more of the pot, which would make oversteering less likely, or maybe you will use a very fast, highly aerated mix like Al's gritty mix that makes pot size almost irrelevant, but this is general advice that might get you going.
