Back Lighting A Shower Shampoo Niche
Comments (13)I am having fun with this. This light feature is for my four best clients (My wife and three daughters). I often find inspiration at work or when talking with clients. I tell my clients just to spit stuff out - wish list, likes etc. There is no such thing as a crazy idea in my book. If you can think it - most likely there is a way to build it. My inspiration for this detail came from working with such nice products and such a skilled designer on our last project. The steps needed to make it waterproof are easy - the advice is all around us. I will show you my fully completed rig once done. I'm going to try and source an inexpensive LED light system with most likely 3 lights, light controller and remote (similar to the shower lights we used last from the UK). When I roughed in my home I ran some extra dedicated 12/2 and 14/2 lines into these attic cavities. The bathroom lighting circuits have been keep separate to allow me to expand my finishing touches as my bank account slowly expands from it's compressed and sad state. For the next year or so it will be a trouble light and an extension cord! Good for now. The effect is still there. I have 3 other light features planned for the home. Stand by for mock ups... Comments (3)You can try looking for something called elastomeric paint. It's a very thick paint mixed with a lot of rubber, or rubber cement mixed with paint, depending on your point of view. The mfr will give a very long (10 years?) warranty. However, any paint is only as good as its application. Sometimes the extremely water resistant paints are worse than porous paints because once there is a tiny place for water to get in, it has nowhere to go and ends up turning into a massive mold/dry rot problem....See MoreNiche or no niche in shower
Comments (22)I would put the niche on the right wall, even un-centered, rather than under the window. The size you need might depend on just how much soap / shampoo your family uses. I love niches when properly waterproofed, but I wouldn't want them to be the focal point of a shower. Instead let your window be the centerpiece and tuck the functional niche on the side like you'd planned. Glass shelves in a shower, especially one used by children, seems like a bad idea. You don't want someone accidentally breaking or even slipping and grabbing a glass shelf. A niche is awesome because it's tucked out of the way but still provides ample storage....See MoreWater resistant ceramic tiles for shower niches??
Comments (4)You can use any subway tile except for ones with a crackled finish, and even those can be used but need to be sealed pror to installation and may crack further. I would steer clear of crackling. The showroom will explain which can and cannot be used. I just put a deposit down on Pratt and Larson subway tiles for the shower walls; they come in myriad colors and finishes, apart from crackled. I was told this yesterday at three different tile showrooms in NYC....See Morelive_wire_oak
