Comments (34)Redesigned kitchen stove. I like it, it has a hutch look and I think great storage. Rather than using a real column that is 24" deep, and then having to bump out the depth of the cabinets to 24" deep and then having to shrink down my cabinets, or have odd looking cabinets on the wall, we have settled on this, which I like. Over the stove is a decorative valance, not exactly a 'hood'. This works for me because i can get a small vent with lights, I think. One the size that would be on the bottom of a microwave. If anyone knows of sources that would be great, otherwise I think I'll find something at lowes. So that shrunk I have added 2 cabinets 21" wide that drop all the way down and have 3 or 2 drawers at the bottom. Not sure which I'll choose yet. I will put my spices in them I think. So I get spice storage, and i get decent cabinet space, all at standard sizes so I will be able to use my cabinet storage. Then on the bottom, next to the range are 2 30" cabinets, one with 3 drawers and the other with a drawer and cabinet. it may be a little light on counter but I have a flat top range and I've lived with very little counter space next to my range now for 10 years...I think I can deal with it, that is why I've got my little island I'm liking the floor color! I am thinking I will have to find gold tile now. On the refrigerator wall, I've also decided to go down the full length of the wall with large cabinets, and at the bottom of what was in the middle above the microwave, I'm going to add a full length cabinet with an appliance garage. I'm leaning toward the one that continues to look like a cabinet door to keep the full wood look. That cabinet above will still be 24" deep. And for all of us designers out there, you can download a free version of this design software at http://www.chiefarchitect.com/ They have serious software for the true architect/designer/contractor and also home enthusiast software. I like using it. Its been great! You can use the free software but you can't print or save the kitchen design....See Moretable runner and placemats for round kitchen table
Comments (28)You know, maybe they did come from BB&B. I just remember DH found them and then showed them to me. BB&B is probably where we got ours. The colors are fairly bright -- it makes me think of Fiestaware. Get them and see if you like them....See MoreWhich color should I stain my kitchen cabinets?
Comments (20)I"ve been staining wood a very long time. Don't tell me gel stains don't penetrate and that you should do 4 coats. you are not supposed to do 4 coats. gel stains do get lightly absorbed into the wood with also sitting on the surface. But It's not nail polish christinero. GF has enough pigments to 'stain' the wood w/one coat. putting on additional coats results in a tacky, gummy finish, and could also result in cabinets w/a poor finish, especially for a kitchen. this is from GF website on applying gel stain: Optional: apply a second coat to deepen the color. Apply no more than 2 coats https://generalfinishes.com/wood-finishes-retail/oil-based-wood-stains-sealers/oil-based-gel-stains I have worked w/ GF stains on many, many wood projects. one coat is fine. Like I said, if you want a darker color, then go with a darker shade. there is no need to do 4 coats! good lord. why create more work for yourself? Gel stains act more like a paint and tend to hide the grain of the wood. I would never use a gel stain on a beautiful piece of walnut, tiger oak or bridseye maple. it would cover the beautiful wood details. If you want to use 3-4 coats of a gel stain, then you might as well use an espresso paint. you will get similar results with a lot less work. you will need at least 3 coats of a clear top coat after the stain dries. please read the above link for the complete how-to's in staining your cabs. especially this part Preparation for Projects with an Existing Finish and Christinero,,,,,there are dyes, stains and gels. all three penetrate, but at different levels. gels are the lightest and don't bring out the depth of the wood grain like the stain or even the dye would. (I've used all three). but gel stains still penetrate. gels have a heavier ratio of pigments and tend to give off more even looking coloring....See MoreFarmhouse kitchen table, round or rectangular???
Comments (11)Dianne -- yes, I would not want to linger over a meal on stools. But a quick breakfast on a stool isn't that bad. As I said it's where you "eat" rather than "dine". We have an interesting story about this work island. We got it from the Scottish Rite in our town when they closed and auctioned everything off. This very table was where we prepped DD's wedding dinner (as we rented the Scottish Rite kitchen for our wedding kitchen because it was right across the street from the reception venue) so it has memories. But I think you'd be happier with a rectangle especially if it is in the middle of the room. As far as "old" rectangular tables -- they're popular now so there should be a lot to chose from -- real antiques as well as those that are made to look like antiques....See MoreRelated Professionals
