Comments (52)M, So great to hear your take on form following function. I think we share a practical streak. On the one hand, I'm not a preservationist, on the other I do want to be true to the spirit of the house. I'm not aiming to make it something its not, and I don't want to "over improve" either. I agree that its entirely possible to "design a modern functional home and have the original vintage design-spirit prevail". In fact, thats precisely the balance I'm striving to achieve. In my situation, honoring the vintage design spirit means keeping certain elements intact: --the cottage windows --the china cabinet --the built-ins in the living room flanking the fireplace I'm not as attached to keeping the kitchen and breakfast room spaces separate as my partner is. In the spirit of cooperation and domestic harmony ;-) I've solicited feedback on how we could fit everything in the footprint of the kitchen proper, and posters to this thread stepped up admirably (THANK YOU!!) Reading the comments here has allowed me to feel more comfortable with merging the kitchen and the breakfast room--that this might be the right place to "modernize". Considering the two spaces as one is beginning to feel…well…more practical to me. Your point about it being possible to botch both the form and the function strikes a cautionary note---Sheesh, that would be awful. Aiming to avoid this, on both counts! Thanks so much M, for your always incisive comments....See MorePuzzling wrinkled leaves on Marble Queen Pothos
Comments (4)We really need an image; but, it sounds like a Ca(lcium) deficiency, which can be caused by an actual paucity of calcium or by cultural conditions that inhibit calcium uptake. Is the plant in a commercially prepared potting medium? Odds don't tell you anything other than what is likely, but odds favor the probability that soil saturation is limiting calcium uptake. Soil compaction could be at issue, and an excess of Mg in the soil solution can limit Ca uptake. Have you dosed the plant with an Epsom salts solution? Calcium must be in the nutrient stream at all times if cells are to form normally. If it's not, many growth abnormalities can occur - usually more prominent in the newest growth. These are potentialities, not a diagnosis. More info is needed. Al...See MorePuzzled About Restaurants
Comments (74)Growing up, ate out a few times a year, typically to celebrate a special occasion. Both parents worked but we always ate a home cooked meal together as a family. As newlyweds, DH and I were focused on saving for our future and ate out only occasionally. When the kids were old enough, we'd eat out on occasion but otherwise home cooked meals together. Now, as semi-retirees, we enjoy local international restaurant meals when traveling (approx. 12 weeks/year), but otherwise our preference is, with some exceptions, to eat at home. Our DD was given an assignment for a college communications course in which she was to choose an occasion and give a talk celebrating the guest(s) of honor. She chose to give her talk at her parent's future 50th anniversary party. This was unbeknownst to DH and I until she gave us the video later as a Christmas gift. In this talk she referenced the importance of our family meals ("every. single. night. no. matter. what.") and how much they meant to her and our son. I had absolutely no idea the impact our family meals had on them until then. (Another mention was our frequent family walks and hikes, referred to as "death marches" at the time, but apparently weren't really all that traumatizing and are activities they continue as adults.)...See Morelgmd_gaz
