Vent Screws - Can anyone tell me what this is and where to get it?
Comments (21)Just coming across this discussion a couple years later. my home was milled on site in 1907. since moving in 2 years ago, we have been busy with a list of projects large & small. these wall & floor vents were one of the first things on the list, mostly because I have no interest in fishing my 1 & 3 year old out of them. I agree with you Russ. This was the standard hardware & fashion for the time. There was a metal vent shaft that covered the wood shaft. A screw, then eye of the hook hardware threaded onto screw at one end. The end of the Hook fastens to the hole in the metal shaft. All of mine are this way as well. I have not seen these parts in my searches either. Over the years if the metal shafts are damaged or removed, I’m sure you would have to get creative & secure the vent cover another way. local hvac company sounds like a good place to look. Also, I have come across good accessories online at ”house of antique hardware”. here is a picture of our vent with inside hook & screw attatched & unattached....See MoreHow to remove the "trim" piece above the top piece of vinyl siding?
Comments (4)Yes, based on your photos it looks like an undersill inside a J-Channel. Pretty standard. I don't know if there is a specific tool for unbuckling the top piece of siding from the undersill trim, but you could try a vinyl siding removal tool like this: It's meant for removing one piece of siding from another, but it might be helpful to get it out of the undersill trim, too. Fortunately the end of your undersill trim is accessible, so just start at an end and slide the removal tool in and work your way along, horizontally. It has a little hook on the end of the blade which could help pull the undersill trim outwards. As you do that, pull down on the piece of siding with your hand. Hopfully it will un-click. Once you get it off, you'll need to cut the piece of siding down a bit to the correct height (don't cut it too short!), and then re-punch the top edge with a vinyl siding punch like this one: If I remember correctly the punch is a little pricey at around $30 but it makes a specialty hole/impression that clicks into the undersill trim. Probably worth it to have the correct tool. Let me know if that doesn't make sense....See MoreWhere can you buy the special vinyl replacement trim?
Comments (3)A photo would help especially of the trim removed. Is the wall cladding also PVC and the siding fits into grooves on the trim or does the cladding butt against the trim? Vinyl is PVC which is made in different ways. The most common types are hollow or foam filled thin PVC and solid cellular PVC. I suspect its the thin PVC that cracked because it depends on plasticizers to keep it flexible and eventually they outgas leaving a very brittle material. I would replace it all with cellular PVC....See MoreSealing horizontal sliding windows. What is this part called?
Comments (13)Thanks again for you response toddinmnand sorry if my response or my understanding was not clear. The house is brick and concrete. The windows are pvc with each window having a fixed sash and a rolling sash that sit inside a pvc channel (Sills?) that forms the window frame. The sashes sit on rails about 1 inch off the bottom of the pvc channel on the bottom and about 1/2 inch between the top sash and the top pvc channel. The pvc channels are level and both ends and the center have the same 1 inch gap. Im sure Kommerling knows exactly whats needed but unfortunately they dont respond to my request for help so i was hoping that someone here could give good avise....See MoreNorwood Architects
