Lp siding wanting to stain to look like natural wood

Has anyone out there stained lp siding with semi-transparent stain and had good results? I've been told I can use a deck stain or water based stain that sits on top of the siding and doesn't need to penetrate the material. I've been told it won't work, will need to be redone every 2 years and may chip off. I've been told to use solid stain or regular paint, but I don't want a flat paint look. I want a natural wood look in a color like walnut. The lp siding on my house is painted pale yellow. I guess I'm going for the rustic look, like a cabin or barn. Any advice? I can't do a lot of fancy brush work or anything like that.

If it is painted already you are not going to effectively strip the paint and stain the siding. That being said from what I know you will not get a pressed wood fiber siding to stain and look like a real wood siding. The face surface is not designed that way.

The surface is made to not absorb moisture, so there is no way for a stain to work like it would on wood.

Many of the problems with certain sidings is that they are not properly back ventilated. Many of the issues with these products came from not using a furring strip or other spacer to create a drainage plane behind the siding. All siding leaks (even brick) and it is important for water behind the siding to flow down and away from the siding. Still this seems shaky and I would probably go in a different direction.

Am I wrong in assuming that insulated vinyl siding or engineered wood siding either would be cheaper than brick? I looked into hardi board before I found the engineered wood. It seemed like the installation process was pretty difficult and easy to mess up. I'm not really sure why I started leaning towards engineered wood. I'll probably price out both. I haven't seen either one in person so that may be a deciding factor as well.

i was just on the cabot website. I think what i should have done the first time around is a mix of bleaching oil and stain. Can i put bleaching oil OVER semi-transparent stain? What would happen. Semi-transparent stain is the color of weathered wood (a light gray). thanks.

Paint grade trim is made from short pieces of wood joined together with finger joints---that zig zaggy look. :) The sections used often have very different grain patterns---which take stain much differently---making the result look like a hit and miss stain job---light sections between darker sections---and the finger joints stand out like they are spotlighted.
