Range hood ideas for 2-burner cooktop & no upper cabinets

I'm converting my garage to a guesthouse (this is a permitted ADU in California), and we're required to have a built-in cooktop. The space will be used mostly for overnight guests and as an office, so not much cooking will actually be done. We're putting in a small a 2-burner cooktop (likely induction--just 13 in. wide). I was only planning to have lower cabinets and really hate the idea of having a wall mounted hood (or any hood for that matter) with such a small cooktop.

The best solution I've come up with is to look for a cooktop with a downdraft feature, or to install a retractable downdraft hood, but these both seem like such a waste of money and space.

Does anyone have other ideas for a workaround? Something not too obtrusive that would make sense with such a small cooktop? Attaching a couple photos that served as inspiration for the look of the kitchen design/aesthetic. Thank you in advance!

The answer depends on what constraints you can impose on guest cooking. Heating water for tea or boiling eggs doesn't really require a hood. If you will allow wok cooking or meat searing, then a real hood, mounted over the cooking zone, will be required if you want the grease captured and contained. In between these limits, one has a gray zone of trading eventual cleaning and repainting for avoiding the aesthetic harm of having a hood on the wall, plus lack of odor removal.

I think I should mention that there are various pretty hoods that are poorly designed to capture properly over a 30-inch cooktop, but which might be sufficient for light cooking over a 13-inch cooktop and which would appear less obtrusive.

Shannen, what did you decide on? I am installing a 2-3 burner gas range into a kitchen with no ducted exhaust. If you went with recycled non-duct venting, I’m curious what unit you bought and whether you would recommend it.

My 24" deep hood is mounted about 32" above my 37" high counters, so 5'9" off the floor. I'm 5'8" and dh is 5'11", we have no problems. I have a Capital GCR305 gas range that extends out into the kitchen quite a bit compared to a drop-in cooktop where you stand right up against the counter, so take that into consideration when judging headroom. My largest burner is in the center, but all the burners are pretty powerful.

Angie, found your comment interesting. I have a bottle green Blue Star 30 RNB. Love the range, but like Tina have often thought may-be I should have gotten black or brown-black rather than green. I do like the green with the wood, and it restates the green used throughout our house, but still I sometimes think I should have gone with something more neutral, and that black or stainless would have been more "authentic" looking as we have a period looking kitchen. Do not want to hijack Tina's thread -- may-be we should do a thread on color range -yes or no?

@jclee77 @shead I found this product today that is intended for this purpose; have the same issue: https://www.build.com/windster-we30/s985450?uid=2432737 2" x 6" x 30" metal filler to help push forward range hood. (Product is Windster WE30 or WE36, for 30" or 36" wide ranges, in case the link dies). Seems to be available from numerous sites.

I would look at the 9" tall under cabinet Vent-A-Hood with 600 CFM. I had a very similar installation in a previous home. I had the 30" Bluestar and the bottom of the hood was only 22" above the stove, at the time it was my only option short of a complete remodel. I looked at the hood and the VAH can be as close as 18" off the cooking surface and still meet UL guidelines. Also let me say that I an 6'4" tall and had no problems using any of the burners with the hood that close. From a performance stand point the closer the better for capturing the cooking contaminants. With the 2-3" tall hoods you still need to have the blower somewhere and this is usually in the cabinet above but more importantly the short hood will not give nearly enough capture/holding area for the hood to even have a chance of venting properly.

Hi Shannon - i am in the process of adding a ADU and have the same opinion as you as I dont the like the idea of bulky hoods. Could you pls advise what did you pick for your garage ADU- thanks in advance.
