mason bee homes (which is best)
Comments (23)I just read through this 3 year forum. It's nice to see great questions and answers. I work with mason bees on the commercial side. A couple of points. - unless you have chalkbrood, there really is no point to washing your mason bees. If you have harvested your cocoons and separated out the cocoons from the mites/mud/pollen balls, that's all that is needed. Any residual mite on the cocoons doesn't harm anything. The first foraging trip to flowers has mites on the mason bee again. If you have chalkbrood, wash with bleach. Our website has great pictures on pests and processes. Look at http://www.crownbees.com/home-gardner/harvesting for more information. - There are a variety of straws/inserts/reeds to be found on the internet. We have a new one out, the 'EasyTear' that doesn't need an insert, you can tell if it's used by a mason bee, and tears open easily. Reeds are also a good option as well. Lastly, a few questions asked about other mason bees beyond the Blue Orchard Bee. We're helping people be successful with the Japanese Orchard Bee in the east coast and are on the lookout to help others find/manage more. Osmia Algaia (Berry bee) in Oregon is a good one, and there are a few other Blueberry bees found. We're looking to help understand location, crops that can be supported, and nesting practices for each bee. Native bees are vital to pollination. Continue to give your bees away to your friends and help them succeed! Comments (13)I agree with those who refuse to pour a ton of extra money into carpeting. We did, 14 years ago, and while I did get a LOT of compliments on the Sculpted Berber that we chose, it's a $%&$@ to vacuum because all the dog hair, lint, crumbs, etc., wants to 'hide' in the sculpt and I've wished for the last 10 years now that the carpet would just evaporate right off the floor and be gone. Heck no, this stuff is going to outlive US, I swear, as 14 years later, it still looks almost brand new even though it's a very light 'stone' color. Luckily we're moving away from IT instead, building another home, and while I have nothing against Berber in general, we did opt for Frieze this time as a change of pace. Actually, we're doing a combination of Porcelain tile in the Foyer, Kitchen & Baths, Laminate in the Dining Room, Office and Workout Room, and then Frieze in the remaining Bedrooms, Family Room and Living Room. It's a heck of a lot softer than Berber, but I kinda/sorta agree with whoever it was that said that it reminded her hubby of the outdated Shag. I'm hoping that I'll like this!...See MoreTV Houses: Name your bests and... worsts
Comments (51)Probably Sopranos and maybe Six Feet Under? The Wire is up there. Sopranos makes you really care about these horrible, yet terribly interesting people. Also some good action and plotting, although it didn't know where to go towards the end and the last season sucked! Six Feet Under could be very bleak and moody at times but so quirky and artistic. I also have a soft spot for Dallas and Knots Landing. Those last two shows aren't nearly as good from an artistic standpoint, but love the nostalgia and the characters. Speaking of Six Feet Under, yes I loved Ruth's upstairs part of the funeral home. It was so vintage-y and old, but totally Ruth! Carmela Soprano---those fake leather couches with the big puffy arms? That godawful kitchen chandelier and the balloon valances? The formica kithen counters with the wood trim. I did kind of like the rugs in her entry and living room with the water lily motif and the coral colors in her living room. That musical note thing above her living room fireplace was gross. Does anybody remember Valene Ewing's pepto-pink living room? Loved the house and the grounds at Gary Ewing's ranch, but the inside was disappointing. You'd think with Abby living there it would have been a bit more grand. Karen McKenzie's house looked like real people may have lived there. Remember Valene's boyfriend Ben? He had that amazing beach house with the sunroom filled with exotic orchids....See MoreThings not to overlook when building your dream home.
Comments (40)cpartist Nhb we are talking about aisle clearances in case of the need for a walker or wheelchair. What works minimally doesn’t always translate for ADA Yes, I realize this. Just sharing my experience with our adult daughter getting around, in both a wheelchair and a walker, in our kitchen that a had 42" clearance. Of course, more is great! But if you cannot manage more distance between isles, 42" works. :) If one has a large island, cutting off 3" on either side is not going to make that much of a difference. I may do that in our build. The island will be the last thing to be built. malabacat - I agree whole heartily! My husband and I were both in this accident with our daughter (38). After the accident, I could barely move getting up and down, but I could walk on flat surfaces. Our daughter had to live with us because her home, at that time, had steps in and out. Plus a laundry in the basement. Her husband was working in another town. Our house had steps to get inside (we borrowed a ramp), but we had 3 ground level bedrooms, bathrooms, and the laundry room! Now, we have both moved to rentals. Us building a home. Our daughter and husband relocated. Their home has no bedroom, and only a half bath, on the main floor. She has to have more surgery on her hip. Guess what!!! She will have to come live with us during her recovery phrase! Our new home will have two bedrooms and 2 full bathrooms on the main floor. All with 3/0 doorways. Laundry is located near our bedroom....See Morepetunia56
