Any experience with French Connection by Garrison? - white oak
Comments (12)We love it, and we are a 2 kid, 2 big dog family who is active and lives near the beach. No fading, no problems and it has worn well, given we have not done the proper maintenance- it looks great. In 2015, we used Garrison French Connection in the Oak Caffe color on the ground floor of our house. We had it professionally installed on our concrete foundation, and our installers were meticulous on the prep: they ground down the high spots and then applied a self leveling compound and then glued the floor. This floor has different finishes depending on the color. The caffe has a natural oil finish rather than an aluminum oxide finish, so you're walking on the wood rather than the urethane finish. Likewise, if you scratch it or track in sand, it’s going to wear the wood rather than the urethane. We chose it because it’s easier to hide the scratches. There’s pros and cons to both finishes. If you’re a dog owner, do your research before committing. If i had it to do over again, i would have choosen a little less maintenamce: the same floor in a natural color with the oxide finish, where the light color would not show bad scratches as much as the dark wood, and I could use more potent cleaners to get up pet accidents without stripping the oil finish off. But we also love what we have. so much so, we are now replacing the carpeted stairs and the upstairs carpet with this same floor. 1st picture is after install, the next one is 7 yrs later....See MoreQuality check - engineered flooring brands. Comments (7)If you are not a budget, I would highly recommend Carlisle wide plank flooring. We installed about 2,000 sf of their engineered European oak, I think with some type of oil or wax finish, but it supposedly does not require re-oiling every year like Duchateau. We were shocked at how strong and stain resistant the floors are! We tested a sample before we bought with red wine, jelly, crushed blueberries/blackberries, etc.... Even after hours, it all wiped right off with no stain. We have two kids and two dogs, including one that weighs 80 pounds and that destroyed our previous red oak floors with a polyurethane coating in a condo. After four years, these floors look brand new. There are maybe at most a handful of light scratches/dents (main one from our new fridge install. But these are barely visible and we never felt like we had to touch up anything! Never had any other kind of problems. Only complaint is that maybe 5% of the boards some markings/colorations issues, but I understand that is to be expected from all companies, which is why you order a little extra (although at the price Carlisle charges, they should just inspect and pull those bad planks off the production line). Unfortunately, most of their floors cost upward of $14/sf uninstalled with some quite higher, which is prohibitive for many. We are now looking to maybe using Carlisle again in a new house (although reconsidering because of the price), but when I read all the complaints about other brands (like dents from dropping a spoon), it makes me feel like the extra cost is worth it in the long run! Sure, we could get floors for well under $10 that might have a similar look and save $20K+, but what's the point if they will look awful in a few years? If you have the budget, I highly recommend Carlisle....See Morehardwood floors
Comments (10)That product comes unfinished. If you zoom in on the planks, you'll see some are flat cut. French Oak Quercus robur is denser without the same open grain of domestic white/red oaks. That's why flat cut can be used successfully for another look. Preserving that light shade and non-yellow color after finishing and over time is a goal. I'd like o have the answer. Prime Grade French oak unfinished engineered hardwood flooring - monarchplank Monarch lists Bona® UV Urethane as the finish for the Domaine II and La Grande series. Water based finishes are getting away from the warm yellow oil finishes have created in the past....See MoreI need help finding a pre treated hardwood floor?
Comments (4)We are just finishing installing Reward Mannu from their Costa collection. It is 7.5 inches wide with 5/8 height plank with a 4 mm wear layer. It is rustic grade meaning it has knots and marks, Whether it turns out to have been a good choice or not - only time will tell. When we felt like we had no idea how to make a decision, or even what the decision points were, a friend arranged for us to visit a local hardwood distributor and have the show room manager give us an educational tour. This was very helpful because unlike the local flooring companies, this distributor didn't sell to end customers or quote prices to them - only through their contractors - so we got a lot of unvarnished (so to speak) information. And we learned about wear layers, wood grades etc. Anyway after that visit, we felt like we knew how to make a decision and what was important to us and we had written down about 4 different floorings we liked and we were able to discuss them with our contractor. Hope that helps. As I said, we are just finishing installation. Whether it was a good choice or not - only a few years will tell....See MoreSJ McCarthy
