Hard floors are fine in some areas of the country, but in cold areas carpet is so much warmer under foot and energy efficient. I laugh when I see people put in hard floors and then cover almost the whole floor with a rug and runners anyway. Why? You just have twice the expense and twice the work cleaning. Carpet gets no more dust or smells than any other flooring. In fact carpet is better to have because it traps the dust in the carpet until vacuumed. Not just blowing around every time some one walks across it and disturbs it. My son and family bought a house 3 years ago with newly finish hardwood floors. They thought it was great to have hardwood. Now 3 years later they hate them. Between a toddler, two dogs and a cat they look like crap, constant maintenance, and in the winter have to wear shoes constantly. It is very uncomfortable to sit on the floor to play with the toddler. They are looking into putting in wall to wall.

I’d repair wall before painting and add lamps on the nightstands to create more interest as well as better balance and proportion. Regarding sitting area, it’s too lined up. Place chair on an angle (opposite to below) and create a sort of corner vignette. The painting is not working and use a smaller/lighter piece to the right of the chair, so it relates the the seating - per below. Also suggest rearranging the shelving to better compliment room and reading area - could be really attractive

I like the zones you have created. Bed facing door, dressers by the closet For East in getting dressed, and sitting area niche between. I think before you decide on anything you might decide on furniture as it’s design will drive future choices. I think your sitting area might benefit from some type of shelving unit floor to ceiling with closed storage in bottom, open on the upper sides with large niche for the TV in the middle.You could then have a pair of lounge chairs or chaise lounges opposite the TV. Maybe a console table in the window? But definitely go shopping on Houzz and find some rooms that you love and furniture showrooms to be inspired. Take your room measurements with you when you shop! Just off the top of my head ideas!

So my original thought was to place a runner in the large space in front of the bed, I guess just to add some additional character to an otherwise bare floor. Then I learned that a rug partially under the bed was standard... a runner would not "connect" things. I understand having something located at the bed exits have function, but would a 2.5 x 8 runner in front of the bed be a decorating faux pas?
