Wall Ovens? How fancy do you really need?
Comments (22)David, I was referring to your linked thread and what you said about it. Here, in this thread, brand names have been included by many in the discussion of function to provide concrete examples. This is useful for people who actually want to buy an oven, not just talk theory. Recently, I spent a lot of time shopping carefully looking for a simple oven with simple controls for an elderly woman who doesn't want to adapt her cooking to a new appliance, but wants the oven to act like any oven she's had before. She can't see well enough to use a touch display. I have been utterly dismayed by the lack of decent plain old ovens out there, which turn on, get hot, hold heat. Right now, we're trying to see if we can get her old oven restored. If that fails, I'm going to check out your very useful brand name suggestion from the other thread about the Ikea oven. It's one that had escaped my notice before--oh...because it doesn't come in the right size. Ikea might be an example of a cheap one that functions as well as a fancy one, from the reviews I've just read. Much better reviews than some of the mid-range units. It's very unfortunate that the ne plus ultra of energy savings seems to have trumped cooking/baking function in the current goals of oven design. No wonder rich people are putting wood fired ovens in their homes....See MoreDo they make rages w/out electronics?
Comments (23)All appliances now have electronics. If surges are harming a stove, then furnace, dishwasher, air conditioner, and clock radios are also at risk. In any facility that damage cannot happen, a 'whole house' protector is earthed. And money is not wasted on plug-in protectors. Effective protection means nothing is damaged even by direct lightning strikes to incoming utility wires. Even the protector remains fictional. A protector destroyed by a surge is not effective and can even create other hazards. Just another reason why informed consumers install one 'whole house' protector. No protector is protection. Not one. An effective protector connects short (ie 'less than 10 feet') to earth ground. Even a 'whole house' protector without sufficient earthing is ineffective. Earthing means every wire in every incoming cable makes a connection to the only thing that provides protection - earth. A connection via a direct wire (ie cable TV) or a connection via a protector (AC electric, telephone). Damage to the stove indicates a problem that exists everywhere in the building. An effective solution (for about $1 per protected appliance) is one 'whole house' protector (properly sized). This was discussed further in: http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load/appl/msg020938102146.html?9 > Only protection is a 'system' component that dissipates energy. That > earth ground must both meet and exceed post 1990 code. ... Protection already exists in every appliance including that stove. Your concern is the typically destructive surge that overwhelms appliance protection. The well proven solution for that (which puts all appliances at risk) is earthing one 'whole house' protector....See Moreavoiding dryer sheets, steam dryer?
Comments (10)I don't think lack of electronics has anything to do with SQ reliability. By the way, I have read that the timers in the SQ residential top loaders actually have a HIGHER failure rate than SQ's electronics, which they use in ALL their front loaders as well as their commercial top loaders. They are confirming this by REPLACING the timer with electronics in their new residential top loaders coming out next year that will replace AWN412, AWN432, AWN542. Why is this the case? Speed Queen uses high quality electronics, just like all the other high quality parts they use. Electronics aren't the problem. CHEAP, CRAPPY electronics are the problem. How often does the "board go out" in your car? Rarely if ever, because the electronics in cars are high quality. The mechanical parts go out first, which is also what happens in a Speed Queen and is exactly how it should be! All that said, no matter what the brand, we don't hear about washer electronics failing too often anyway. It tends to be more common in appliances where the electronics are exposed to harsher conditions, like ovens and dishwashers. Comments (20)Thanks everyone for all your comments. I have done so much research now on every brand that's been mentioned here. I'm still not sure of what brand to buy since they all seem to have their problems. I have heard that Speed Queen is about the best but it is pricier. I do believe tho that I will stick to an old fashioned agitator model and not go with the HE models. The HE's are much more attractive but it IS just the laundry room. It's so easy to get caught up in all the hype about low water usage, pretty colors and designer looking machines when all I really want is something that will get my clothes clean without ruining them and not break down all the time. I have never had to spend one dime on the old Kenmore washer and dryer that I have now and it's OLD! I know things aren't built like that anymore so will just have to get over it and lower my expectations somewhat, but I still don't want to spend good money on machines that will not last. Whatever I wind up with, I just hope it's not a lemon. I think that's the problem nowadays...the quality is just not there anymore. Too many plastic parts, too many engineering shortcuts. A lot more lemons than there use to be. :(...See More
