Backer Board for Cement tile kitchen backsplash

I am getting ready to purchase and install encaustic cement tile from Villa Lagoon in my kitchen remodel as backsplash. I need to know if backer board is required for the tile above my electric range, as it will go from counter to ceiling, behind an exposed range hood/pipe. The manufacturer recommends it but cabinet guys says not needed. I think they recommended it because of weight, not moisture but am hoping it is not needed. It is on a wall with 5/8" drywall and will run a span of 32" x 54". There are cabinets on both sides of this span to the ceiling. Advice is much appreciated as I will be doing this by myself and have not done tile before. Also, cabinet guy says easier to use caulking to attach the tiles. Manufacturer is ok with this. Does this sound ok? Thank you!
