I need a system for storage - help please!!!!
Comments (19)Thank you ALL for the suggestions. I will try to finish this post before my service stops. It does every time it rains hard. Melvalena, I think I would have given up if I had to go to a storage building. I'm too lazy and too far out in the country for that. I don't have a coat closet. I did switch to a regular bed from a waterbed when DH came home from the hospital after getting hurt last year. Under it is packed full of plastic bins already. Son, took the waterbed and already has the drawers full of his stuff. His closet is packed, DH's aunt's closet is full of her stuff. The 2 china cabinets, buffet, and washstand are all full. Can't even get to the washstand doors because it is in a nook behind the sofa and the whole 3-4' space between the sofa and the wall is packed almost to the top of the sofa back with bins and bags of the latest "finds". Magpie, I LOVE the decorative boxes. I will add them to my shopping list. At least that will get all of my napkin rings,s/p shakers, placecard holders, etc, together. I bought bins after Christmas and tried to make an (on paper) list of what I put in each bin and numbered the bins accordingly. But, I'm out of space for bins. I have things on top of my kitchen cabinets now and I'm getting too old and unsteady to keep climbimg up and down to dust them. I have to stand in a chair and then step up on the counter to reach them (SCARY). So I don't think I will do the over the window shelves, even though it's a great idea for someone younger. Yacht, I like the lift-top bench idea. There is a tiny space under the windows in the den/sunroom that DH could install a short one. No room for cedar chests. I will be measuring all closets to see if we could sneak an extra shelf in. Our MB closet top shelf is used for luggage, quilts, sheets, etc since we have no linen closet. I already use behind the door for the Halloween bins. Jane, I saw the pics of your new hutch. LOVE it! I will be checking the unfinished furniture store. You can't buy the lumber to build one for the great price you got the hutch for! If I can EVER find other space for all the stuff behind my sofa, I could fit a short/shallow chest there and still have access to the buffet and washstand. Lee, I love your name. Lee is a family name and just about all of the Gkids have it for their middle name. I love your trashcan idea with the extra security of the tarp and bungee cords. As soon as DH puts up the carport he just got moved from the old place and closes it in I may be sharing the little shed he is using now with DS. It has a leak somewhere, but if the trashcan is totally enclosed (and covered with the tarp), it may still work. When DH gets all of the junk out we may find the leak. LOL And I'm sure I can whine until he lets me share some of the space in his new "Garage"! I have one of those decorator tables on DH's side of the bed. I'll start putting stuff under there NOW! Kathleen, There is one section in our kitchen that a cabinet will fit. Even though DH is a beginner carpenter, he has promised to build me a floor to ceiling cabinet for that space. I asked for it as a Christmas present so I can get it soon. I have the "I WANT IT NOW" problem too! If we can stop hitting deer we may have the extra $$s for lumber. I hit another one coming home from church last night. At least the radiator leaked slowly enough that I got home before it overheated. :o( Karen, I may try the computer list, but y'all don't realize how computer challenged I still am! I'm doing a dance now because I finally managed to post a link this morning. YEA!! Sorry this is so long. If you think of anything else, Please share. Love to all, Betty...See MoreNeed help with bedroom arrangement and closet storage
Comments (8)Definitely no room to angle in a cabinet and we're about 2 feet short to move the bed to any other wall. The shoe cabinet could go into a closet and even though it would take up floor space, we could fit more shoes in there that way. The large art piece has lived above the bed in another house and looks great but we were planning on hanging sconces above the bed and that would result in the canvas hanging too high. Will probably take them back- the bedside tables we're going to order are 24" wide so have room for table lamps. I think I'll move the smaller chest where everyone advises but it creates a new issue- too much wall space with just the chest and chair. I suppose I could put a small round table next to it? I have a lovely painting that has always loved above my dresser but would have looked terrible with the two chests together. The cats are going to be crushed after we've unpacked. They're loving all the boxes!...See MorePlease help with closet layout
Comments (7)I am not a fan of wire shelving int he closet - especially the kind you have, where you can't slide hangers from one side to the other. as long as you are replacing, I would install separate rods, with shelves as needed. Having 2 rods in the left-hand side seems to make sense - it looks like you have more need for short hanging than long (dresses). Perhaps you could move the rods down a bit, so you can use the shelf up above - looks like your suitcase could fit up there, if you had a little more room. On the right side, perhaps put a rod for long hanging along the back wall, if 21" is enough. Position the rod to maximize shelving above or below - whichever you find more useful. In my DH's closet, I put his clothes rod as high as I can reach, with shelves below - it's very efficient use of space. On the right wall, you can install shelves 36" wide - that should give you room to easily access the hanging clothes. I would use boxes or something to determine how much access space is needed, so you can have shelves as wide and deep as possible. When installing shelves, make sure you put in enough shelves so you don't have to stack a lot of things. I have shelves that are just far enough apart for shoes; others are spaced far enough apart to stack a few pairs of jeans or sweaters. Have fun with your project, and be sure to come back with "after" photos!...See MoreBest storage for closet shelving?
Comments (11)Remove everything except the top shelf. A few inches below that, add a pair of 1"x4" boards horizontally on the side walls of the closet, front to back. Nail the boards to the wall where there are studs. (Stronger than attaching them to drywall w/o stud behind it.) Use a pair of these -- one on each board, to hang a sturdy rod for clothes hangers. https://www.amazon.com/ULIFESTAR-Stainless-Brackets-Furniture-Hardware/dp/B07RTX2H3V On each side of your hanging rod, add one of these. https://www.amazon.com/mDesign-Hanging-Organizer-Leggings-Lingerie/dp/B07J1VQ6NR Beneath each of those, you could add the large plastic bins you already have and/or a shoe rack.. Between them add one of these as wide as you need ... all the way across if you don't need space for a long coat etc. https://www.containerstore.com/s/closet/closet-accessories/lynk-double-hang-closet-rod/12d?productId=10000195 Add under bed storage, with or without the wheels. https://www.google.com/search?q=under+bed+storage+containers+with+wheels+at+walmart&source=univ&tbm=shop&tbo=u&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjL4onq-8XnAhUnnOAKHb0pAwUQsxh6BAgMECs&biw=1366&bih=628#spd=16154730769910609920&spf=1581302762740 Save one under bed storage bin for tennis shoes that might have a scent to them. You could add a container with a product to absorb moisture and/or smells: https://www.google.com/search?biw=1366&bih=628&tbm=shop&ei=wcRAXtqfI--kggffko-QDQ&q=box+of+baking+soda+w%2Flid+to+open+to+absorb+moisture+and+smells&oq=box+of+baking+soda+w%2Flid+to+open+to+absorb+moisture+and+smells&gs_l=psy-ab-sh.3...5174.12556.0.12738.44.44.0.0.0.0.156.3658.36j7.43.0....0...1c.1.64.psy-ab-sh..1.0.0....0.IeDA-w8iP0Y#spf=1581302992917 Or Downy fabric softener sheets or fabric softener pellets or moth balls or other scented product you like to help the smell. If you need to lift your bed to fit a pair of under bed storage containers beneath it, use these. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Mainstays-Regula-Black-Bed-Riser/937595676?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=0&wl13=4436&adid=22222222227289056471&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=347178922769&wl4=aud-430887228898:pla-738040478623&wl5=9011029&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=8175035&wl11=local&wl12=937595676&veh=sem&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIjoLMvvvF5wIVwp6zCh0ggwMjEAQYBCABEgLMXPD_BwE...See Morejslazart
