Need help selecting oven cabinets (pics)
Comments (9)That location is where the OP proposes to place his new ovens. It's not my suggestion. I'm just trying to work with his proposal. If this kitchen were presented to me as malleable and completely open to change, what I would suggest would be moving the refrigerator to the proposed oven location (on the far end) and creating a snack center there, as well as placing the cleanup sink and DW there. A laundry room does not create a big traffic pattern to worry about at all. I would choose the current refrigerator location as the oven location. I would also eliminate the funky peninsula with the cooktop on it in favor of placing it on the back wall where the DW is currently for better ventilation. Then put a prep sink on the island and extend it (at an angle) into the former peninsula space. The current oven and desk area would be narrowed down for better clearance behind the seating and become pantry storage. But this isn't a wholesale remodel. That already happened, and he's just trying to make the best of what exists currently. And that's why I suggested creating a "baking center" out of the proposed location rather than attempting to make it the destination for popping in a seared steak from the cooktop to finish off. That will most likely still happen with the current oven as it is more convenient in location for that type of usage. Even if it does die, a cheap 24" replacement would keep that cooktop to oven function happening. However, for dedicated baking, the current location is sub par. For extended cookie or pastry making, the new oven would work great for production if there were a counter and a closer source of water nearby. Thus my suggestion for the counter above a mixer cabinet and baking sheet cabinet and a prep sink on the island. That is my logic behind that suggestion....See MoreLayout help needed for cabinet selection
Comments (4)You have not ordered cabinets yet, right? Change the two cabinets in the island to drawers with soft close and store silverware, dishes there. It would work better if you slide the island away from the sink so that at least a 4.5 foot isle existed between the sink and island. Alternate(1) is to switch the ovens and dish storage cabinet. This is the smallest way of correcting for dish storage. Alternate(2) is to not have oven cabinet at all. Warming drawer to one side of cooktop, both ovens under the island top. Personally, I completely agree with the doors need to become drawers comment above. I would also like a prep sink in the island or to see if the ref could be on the other leg of the "L" shape... So the dishes, micro and ref had better accessibility to people want a drink or snack or to set table or clean up. If you image a kid getting lemonade in the summer, right now the best way for that is to pick up a glass from the dining area cabinet and walk through your work area to the ref. You also might look at how you cook a bit more. I realize I'm not like most people (duh!) - I hate putting unwashed stuff in the ref so I pre-wash most veg when its purchased or brought in. Most people wash immediately before using. If you are in the second category, it might be important to try and arrange the kitchen so stuff coming from the ref goes to the sink, the prep area and then the range....See MoreNeed Help Selecting Kitchen Materials/Color Scheme
Comments (4)Ironcook, eventually I would like to upgrade to stainless, but u are right, the crisp white would look better with the white appliances. I think the white appliances might make the cabinets look dirty if I went creamy, etc. I guess what I am worried about-- how would the crisp white look off the family room with the teak leather couch??? Do I need to bring in white woodwork, etc???? I don't have to keep the armoire. Other thought I could warm up the two spaces with a warm green like BM Sag Harbor Gray or Dried Basil---then I guess I would have to accent with green in the living room and dining room, don't know how I would do that (maybe through pillows?) Not sure if carrying different shades of the green on the color chart might help. Just not sure how an entire whole floor would look in green????...See MoreNeed Help with Granite Selection for my new kitchen
Comments (9)Good luck with the granite process! It can be overwhelming. I will be getting off-white cabinets and was looking like you for a granite with movement. My realtor friend steered me away from New Venetian Gold because she felt that speckles were on the way out. I wanted movement but not so so much. I narrowed it to Yellow River, White Spring (similar to Tphoon Bordeaux) and Solarus. I elminated the solarus because I worried that there was not enough contrast between the predominant background color (the color of masking tape) and the off-white cabinetry. Solarus had more clouds than movement and DH seemed to like the Yellow River best. I took the White Spring out of the running myself because of the pink/mauve colors. I remember the 80's when I had a modular sofa that it took me years to get rid of! I had seen a gorgeous bordeaux called Manhattan gold that didn't have the mauve but couldn't find enough slabs. So Yellow River it was for me. All I can say is if you have time keep going back because the places I went to (Fairfield County, CT) kept getting more slabs every week....See Moreirrelephantk
