Boring Mantle - Decorating Help Needed
Comments (33)Thanks for the additional suggestions -- - So for those who say that the white mat is too stark (and I can see your point) What would you suggest instead? - Oopsie - Are you suggesting I rest the painting on the mantle? - Barb - I tried the light pot up there, but thought it just looked like pot-pot-pot... The clock was a different type and material, so it broke the pot-pot-pot thing -- though I agree it's not perfect. A 'horsehair pot' gets it's decoration from horesehair dribbled onto the hot pot straight out of the kiln. That's what gives it the smoky brown haze effect and ridged lines -- actual burned hores hair. - CrazyOne - The fireplace stone is cultured stone in the Chardonnay color, Southern Ledgestone pattern. The seat and mantle are natural limestone slabs. And while it's supposedly legal for wood-burning, we prefer the instant gratification of gas, so that's what we use. No glass or curtain -- but if I find exactly the right screen someday... Here is a link that might be useful: Horse Hair Pottery...See MoreFireplace mantle decor help!!
Comments (26)You have a very nice space. The brick white is great. It appears you can’t really use those chairs much? I would sell them. Move TV to that wall. Get slim console and add slightly bigger TV to simply set on the console. Get a couple stools to put either side if you need extra seating periodically. Then art over fireplace with minimal decor....See MoreHow to decorate my mantle farmhouse chic. Need suggestions.

Comments (18)I agree with Judy G that one piece of art centered over the firebox and highlighted by the single light would be better. It looks like you have an interesting photograph to the right of your fireplace. It looks too small to go over the mantle, but perhaps something that works well with that. You don’t need to add items along the whole width of the mantle. It would be more effective to provide focus in the center. The narrow mantle does look a bit stark against the stone in the photos, and might be improved by being closer to the stone color, again as Judy G proposed. Two other thoughts - to balance the hearth better, perhaps move the two tall candlesticks to the right side of the hearth, or find something else you like to balance the firewood holder. Finally your furniture arrangement (which I realize is not part of what you asked for advice on) seems misaligned. It is a long room. Perhaps either shift the sofa toward the fireplace, even though it wouldn’t be centered on the wall, or center these two chairs on the sofa, and find a wonderful, special, cozy chair to put to the right of the fireplace. Right now, it would be hard to have a conversation between the chairs and the sofa....See MoreElaine Doremus Resumes Written
