front door question
we want to buy a new front door and I'm hoping to get one that is mostly glass but I don't know if a contemporary iron door that I like would fit on the style house I have... can anyone tell me what style house this is and what would a contemporary door look like on my house?

Comments (10)Looks like that glass is already "wavy" so anything seen thru it will be distorted. But I can understand that you still might feel that it doesn't provide enough privacy if your front door will be fairly close to the street and/or you have family members that tend to run around the house less than completely dressed! If the back side of the glass isn't perfectly smooth, films might not adhere very well but if it is smooth, a privacy film would probably be the quickest and least expensive way to deal with the issue. They come in all sorts of patterns and levels of opacity so I'm sure you can find something you like. I'd be a bit hesitant to add a stained glass panel to the interior of the door - although I do think that would look lovely. The problem is that real stained glass is probably not going to be composed of safety glass. With the door opening and closing, however you have the panel attached it could work itself loose and fall. There is a reason that windows in doors have to be safety glass! Another alternative to attaching a real stained glass panel might be to create a faux stained glass look using "glass paint". There are a couple of varieties that I know of. I've linked to a blog about one brand below that I've used successfully but there are others. You can look thru the blog archives to get an idea of some of the things you could do. And the nice thing about glass paint is that, if/when you sell the house, if the next owner wants to be able to see out the glass, they can just scrape the glass paint off the window. Comments (3)Thanks for the repliies. To me the door looks like it hits everywhere at the same time. However, the other night I went outside with the porch light off and the kitchen light on, and I can see a small amount of light at the top part of the gasket. I don't know what level of door this is. It's probably economy. It was a $250 door from HD. Not the $3000 models. We don't have a magnetic weatherstrip. It's a spongy strip that is supposed to compress when the door closes. It's replaceable, and comes out of a notch in the door frame easily. In case you're wondering, it doesn't look damaged to me. I talked to the contractor about the door and he said it was correctly hung. He showed me that the gap between the door and the frame is uniform all around. He did hang a different door wrong, and the gap on the top is wider at one end than at the other end, and on the side the gap is wider in the middle, than on the top or bottom. Ron, do you think that the two jambs could be not parallel, and still allow the door to close with a uniform gap around it? Do you think that we could replace the supplied gasket with a magnetic one? Comments (1)A colorful door is a great idea. With the gray paint (and black shutters, If you decide to keep them) you can do almost anything with the door color. HOWEVER, don't just buy a can of paint and slap it on -- the color on the chip is going to look very different when it's up on your door. 4 years agolast modified: 4 years agoSince the bars are being removed I think that style of door would work well on your home. Not sure if you have looked into the price of an iron door, which is pricey and not thermally broken/not energy efficient, but aluminum might be a better route. You might be interested in our aluminum, multi-lock doors with double, triple, or quadruple pane glass. They are still pricey but much more affordable compared to iron. Plus, they have the same style you are going for and are customizable without additional cost.
You can add grids or mullions, frost the glass, etc:

3 years agookay here is what we've done so far ...and my question now is should I paint all the brick or just leave that one area to the left in the front the natural brick color for diversity or would it just look like I didn't finish the paint job? also I still have not come up with a good idea for those two rectangular areas to the right... incase anyone sees anything I'm missing... I love ideas and opinions

3 years agoWOW and thank you to Glo European Windows &Doors...I love the brick idea....had thought of that but before seeing your picture I could not visualize it.. could you possibly show me a picture with all the brick painted...even chimney....votes are split half and half🙃 and wondering if filling in brick with different pattern (ex herringbone or like this picture) would add or detract....what do y’all think? And I totally agree chiflipper about the landscaping but I will have to research stark modern plantings....clueless.
