Deciding on exterior paint color for brick house
Comments (12)You're right. Drastically changing the exterior of a home is a serious decision not to be made lightly. Before you paint or stain brick, have it pressure washed -- something that (in order to do it right) would need to be done before painting or staining anyway. That will enable you to see the brick at its best and you might rethink painting or staining it. Anything painted or stained will, inevitably, need to be redone and begin to look awful as it begins to reach that point. Before painting the brick, and after you replace the windows, first try painting all the already painted surfaces -- window trim and fascia. Then pause and think about the look you then have and the look you want before proceeding. Personally really loathe most painted brick -- it needs to be some really ugly work to want that ... but, your home, your taste. Either all black or all white windows will go with any color roof or siding....See MoreExterior help - paint full house, limewash brick, just paint siding?
Comments (10)@Zone4 yeah, I think I'm starting to realize that the brick probably helps break up the facade and keep it interesting. I'm starting to be really intrigued with the limewashing idea. If it turns out we could paint the windows, would you do black or white? I like the idea of a black/charcoal, but have also heard that is the worst color on vinyl windows. @aprilneverends it has been hard to really get the colors across from the listing pics. Basically it is 50 shades of unappealing (to me at least) tan inside and out. So I want a dramatic change, but I know people are really torn about changing brick, so I'll probably have my husband mockup a version with the brick and a dark greige paint to see how that looks alongside a limewashed version. Front door, yes, that thing has a big stain glass Texas star that doesn't help anything. I was thinking one of the modern doors with 3-5 satin horizontal lites to keep some light coming in from the door, then finding a complimentary garage door. For the French doors, I definitely won't change my mind on the divided lites - however they are just an overlay on top of a solid piece of glass, so one of the contractors said you could just pop them off. One set of doors needs a new handle, the other needs about $300 in repair work and weatherproofing, so that is why I'm debating whether or not to rehab these versus put in new ones. And if we replace, I don't know if sliding glass doors that let in tons of light or new French doors with the thinnest frame possible would look best. I know landscaping will have a huge impact too, and could really turn this into a more modern looking house. The bones are certainly good, and it is plain enough that we can subtly take it in a couple directions, just trying to narrow down what will look best while also being somewhat our style....See MorePlease help with creamy white exterior paint plan and limewashed brick
Comments (14)Hi Beverly, Here are some more pics I took of the house. The way it is situated on the lot, mostly you see the tall garage from the street. I took another angle so you could see the entryway too. The front door is new, so I haven't stained it yet. I plan to do so after the painting is done. Patricia, thanks for your advice! I am new to the PNW, so it never occurred to me that a white house could look dirty and mildewy, but that does make sense. I like the look of limewashed brick, so did not think it could potentially devalue my property. These points are definitely some things I will need to think about. Thanks for your pic too, the house color of your pic is nicer than my current house color. But I have never been a fan of green houses. Are there other colors that work with reddish brick? My current house color feels very dark and heavy given the constant cloudy days. I would love to achieve a light and airy coastal feeling, if possible. I would love suggestions. My painter got delayed because of rain here, so I have a few more days to decide on colors. thank you!...See Moresiding color change, exterior house upgrade, exterior house design
Comments (3)I do not have an issue with the black windows but why a black roof/ As for the rest the shutters have to go and what is the style you are wanting for the house? The garage door looks pink on my montor so what is planned for that? I need some input from you . I think if you go black for the roof you pretty much have to do gray for the siding and IMO for the garage door too. So find a gray that works with the brick and for sure no strorm door it hides the front door which would be nice to at least see If you use the storm door for the screen get a phantom screen and then an interesting front door with lots of glass.Forget the silly home sign and do a nice big pot filled to overflowing with seasonal plants . I did look at your idea book but nothing there but from that I think you are young why do old lady front door landing decor. especailly if you are going black windows and roof .Actually some redo of the landscaping is the next step ....See Moresuezbell
