Some of my marginals seem to get pot-bound really quickly. But if we're going to keep them in reasonably-sized containers, I think they just have to live sort-of pot-bound. I think they're putting their energy into making roots, rather than growing upwards. What did you fertilize them with? I would just leave them alone and use fertilizer that promotes top growth, rather than root growth. I think that means nitrogen more than phosphate....but I'm not sure. Plants seem to do what they need to do, so maybe you took too many roots away and left too much top growth when you repoted?? I say just leave it alone for awhile and the top will eventually start growing again.

I think M. just nailed it. The crown of your violet died out - but the underground part of the stem still has some life left - and it started sending underground suckers. Provided the stem is healthy - you will get new plants. But - since the top was dying out - the underground part of the stem can rot any time - and the new offshoots will rot with it. So - keep an eye on your plant - and try to dig out at least one sucker and reroot it as soon as possible. If the leaves are dime to nickel size and you have a stem growing from the trunk, not just leaves - cut it off from the trunk - remove the soil to find where it comes from - and reroot - with rooting powder or without - just put a baggie on a solo cup with your baby to keep it humid. I started potting up my dahlias at least a month ago. ..they got potted as eyes started to sprout. Ten minutes ago I was going to give up on the last few tubers that weren't showing any promise yet and toss them into the compost. But yet another little Rock Star tuber now has eyes, so I guess I'm giving the rest of them yet more time. When I saw those new eyes (2 days ago I couldn't see anything on that tuber, even with a magnifying glass...now it's visible to the naked eye), I thought of this thread and had to come tell you not to give up!

That is not jade (Crassula ovata) but Kalanchoe blosfeldiana. Succulents should not be grown or rooted in water (even if some pp do, it is not recommended). Most will rot. Just as they do if in soil that is too wet - as you discovered:..."Too much water and the roots looked like they were rotting"... This Kalanchoe is very easy plant to grow. Pot it up in well draining mix, and it should root. Btw, they will grow also very easily from leaves. I would trim piece of the stem off where either line shows. Let it callus for few hours and pot it up: Make mix of Cactus and Succulent soil and sited perlite, mixing them 1:1 to get good drainage. Here is cutting, similar to yours, potted:Rocks you see are there just to support plant/cutting until roots start growing and anchor it. It is best not to water cuttings without roots, since they can't take in any water and may start rotting if stems sit in wet soil. Put it in bright place but not strong sun, and wait to water until you see new growth - that is usually when roots start growing. Or you can gently tug on it after a while - if there are roots growing, you'll feel some resistance. But do not try looking for roots by digging it up :) It should root in couple of weeks or so. You may see plant growing some air roots from the stem - Kalanchoes often do.
