I pulled my Santa Teresa Feminello lemon out of the ground last week due to no growth in 2 years. Just was fed up with it, in its place I found a nice little red Australian finger lime on C-35 rootstock. I’ll post updates as it grows Into a larger fruit bearing plant. Here are a couple pics of it before and after planting today, sorry for the sideways pics.

Has anyone grown Finger Limes in Texas area?
Comments (78)Thomas unfortunately the HEB by my house does not have anymore of them. Trust me everytime I go to HEB, I make sure to see if they have more. I have one more lime left at the house so I am hoping for some more seeds. The site that I listed on my post is the name of the farm that the finger limes I bought from HEB came from. it looks like you can order from them directly (the fruit that is) from them but you have to pay 14 bucks for the shipping. Prices are not bad, just the shipping is a bit high for some limes that do not weight that much. I also called uscitrusnursery.com and spoke to someone there that said they will start shipping outside their area in March. I plan to order one from them if they have the pink or red color finger limes. I already have 5 of the green ones and have another 11 seeds germinating. hoping to have at least 15 of these plants so I can share with all my friends and family. I am just not sure how long it will take before they start to produce fruits. because of this, I may buy one from uscitrusnursery if they are more mature and already have fruits....See MoreRed finger lime - take two!
Comments (17)Angela - too many of us succumb to the enabling so we get back by enabling others! Hee hee. Vladimir - thanks for confirming what you have. I am thinking it might not be long before they do try to get some red finger limes here in the U.S. somehow. Some of the Aussie posters have listed all the different varieties that are available and I expect or suppose some of the big citrus-focused ag Universities may have them for research/propagation. To get into commercial production for consumers would probably take time for retail nurseries. hibiscus - I have researched a bunch of sites that show both types and they seem to try to keep them to 6ft as a dense thorny bush (in the ground). The larger potted nursery ones shown here in the U.S. (green finger lime) and at Australian retailers (all types of related ones) tend to be in the 2ft - 4ft range and depending on how wayward the branches get, could probably go to 5ft or more when mature in a large pot. If grafted, the rootstock would make some difference on growth rate. Laura et. al, here is mine that I bought over the summer (planted in an 8" pot) and brought inside last week with some of my more tender tropicals (most of the rest of my citrus are still outside) - It didn't grow that much since I got it although it had one tiny flush of leaves at the end of some branches in September (I got it mid-July and potted it in 5:1:1), but will see how it does this winter under the CFLs. As was recommended, I have only been fertilizing it by 1/2 and kept it "in the understory" of some of my other plants when outside (NW-facing location), so it wasn't in full blazing sun, and it seemed to like it like that....See MoreOrdered a Red Lime Tree on a whim. Comments (179)The Red lime fruits ,I'd say, a couple of times per year here. It's like it has three stages of fruit on and flowering again. That red like in the picture above it'll be in the winter. The fruit doesn't lose quality, I'd say it gets better like Centennial kumquat. I see people harvest the fruits way early. The fruits have to change color from yellow green stripes to yellow orange like variegated Minneola. Then the fruits are ready to eat out of hand and they get a bit bigger in size too. What they say about the cold tolerance, they are talking about a mature tree in the ground. We grow young trees in containers, so we have to protect them. My Red lime suffered last year from root rot or something. The limbs started to die. I almost lost it. So it's to weak to have all the fruits. I left a few and they are not looking that pretty this year. The LM got it really bad even though I treated it with the neem oil. But, it's alive and trying to grow back. I'm glad Bill made it home in time to chop wood. Hopefully that wood will keep the stove fed and keep you all toasty warm. Maybe you coulda/woulda/shoulda been chopping wood, but we know that it wouldn't feed your soul the way that gardening does, so we totally get it. Your wind chill was bad and it was bad so much earlier than ours. The cold front didn't make it this far south until tonight, but we're plenty chilly now. Megan, If you need some time to just chill, then allow yourself to do that. I think when our bodies are telling us what it needs, we need to listen. With a three day weekend, you should have adequate time for chilling and seed starting. I'm glad you got the car into the garage so you won't have to chisel ice off the windshield later. The plants don't seem as bothered by the cold as we do. Y'all, the models look like somebody is going to get some snow next week, but I do not necessarily think it will hit many of us unless something changes. We have an unexpected, last-minute bonus weekend with the older granddaughter this week as her dad is unavailable for his weekend with her. Well, his loss is our gain and we're going to enjoy having her here with us, though she might climb the walls a little bit without her little sis around to play with. Of course, we can do things we don't do when little sis is here, like maybe go to a more mature movie (something not G-rated) or to a restaurant that little sis doesn't like. Tomorrow will be just her day and she's already voiced her opinion on where we should eat lunch. : ) Before they called to see if she could come stay with us, I had thought I might do a little plant shopping or something tomorrow but I think instead we'll do something she'll enjoy. It still is pretty chilly to be buying plants, especially since the cold weather doesn't want to go away. I've got flower buds, not yet open. I will probably try and let one of the six buds bloom and get ripe (assuming I can paintbrush pollinate the flowers successfully).
I got this as a very young twig graft from Stan McKenzie this spring. I had seen he had acquired a red finger lime which had one or two fruit on last year during a visit to his farm during the fall, so I beat feet back when I knew he had this (which was his first graft from that plant). Mine cost $20 from Stan (no shipping since I was in person picking the baby up). I'm sure it will take a few more years to reach Evan's plant size, but that works for me, since I have to haul my tropicals in for winters!

4 years agoIn late September, I happened to see a tiny fingerlime on the bonsai bench at a local nursery...so I had to buy it, eventhough I'd told myself NO MORE CITRUS! hahaha!
Anyhow, for $5 I couldn't resist, and it actually turned out to be 2 rooted cuttings, which immediately bloomed and set fruit. I put them in a slightly larger pot, and I'll repot them individually when the season warms up again.
About a month ago, my girlfriend and I went to a new restaurant in town, and one of the appetizers was raw scallop in a cold, citrusy fingerlime broth with Thai chiles and young coconut. It was excellent.
