Should I empty my pot saucers?
Comments (5)I no longer see the point of even having the saucers. Because in extremely dry hot weather that water in the saucer will be quickly reabsorbed by the plant. There is no one method fits all times. Wet cooler weather with lots of rain, yes you may need to empty the saucers. Hot and dry weather, no as the plant will use it within a short period of time. Think of saucers as a poor-man's form of self-watering containers. We leave water in self-watering containers for short periods of time, right? So for much of the summer heat the water can remain in the saucers just note how long it takes it to disappear. If it is still there 24 hours later, dump it. Comments (16)Just to be clear here, a fuel preservative won't do anything to prevent condensation buildup in a metal tank that isn't topped off. I always run lawnmowers, snoblowers &c dry at the end of the season, though I have read recommendations by some small engine mechanics that this can cause certain seals or gaskets in modern engines to dry out. They actually recommend _not_ leaving them dry for long periods. Ethanol laced fuel does have the characteristic of absorbing small amounts of water, to be burned. But it doesn't store as well and wreaks havoc with rubber parts. One trick that works slick, at the end of the season, is run a tank of Coleman fuel. It is basically a low octane gasoline with no additives and does not gum or turn to varnish. Too expensive to run on a regular basis, it is perfect for infrequently used equipment like emergency generators or folks too lazy to drain the tank at the end of the season....See MoreWhat should I put on the walls or in the empty space by the door?
Comments (15)I didn't mean to insult you, it's just that it's easier to make suggestions understanding how the space is used. Knowing that you don't use the space at all, I wouldn't at all recommend a console or table -- there's just no point. And I asked about using the bench because I was going to suggest a galvanized boot/shoe tray, etc. But again, I wouldn't suggest that because there's no point spending the money or cluttering up the space if it's not necessary. I also think decorating or styling is more realistic for the space if it's not overdone. On the wall by the light switch, knowing more about the space, I'd suggest a mirror as well as a hall tree for coats, which could come in handy for overflow outerwear when you entertain, rather than tossing coats on a bed, etc. But a hall tree would probably mean moving the "home" sign. Otherwise, I think a mirror by the light switch and a smaller rug would help considerably....See MoreShould I leave something for the buyers of my home?
Comments (50)So many good comments, and I love a "dilemma" that has to do with generosity and decorum. Warnings about the protocol between buyer and seller and any future impact are of course warranted. I've bought and sold 8 homes over my many years and the transactions and relations were often different (but fortunately never bad). They were either "expected", or beyond what was expected. I never balked at the expected, but smiled with the unexpected. When we downsized a few years ago we left historical history/photos/blueprints, small supplies of all tiles, paint marked for each area, extra custom cabinet shelves, all appliance/fixture docs and maintenance schedule with contractor/repair specialist info., fixture pieces and parts (marked in boxes). The "extra" gift from us was born from an inquiry in the process about a "tree swing" in the front of the house that we politely explained (with photos and stories about it's meaning to our family) could not be included. It was an old swing, hung from what we called "The talking tree", that was quite frankly not in the best of shape, but nonetheless, too meaningful to our family to leave behind. We decided as a family that we would purchase a new one and hang it (big project that our boys took on) for the new owners. This was also a way for our family to pass the torch. Our boys spent a day before the move hanging the new swing on the talking tree, and they placed a big bow on it (wish I had that pic). New owners were genuinely moved....See MoreMarigold
