What ground cover to plant under a deck?
Comments (4)I have a high deck too, and I don't have anything planted under there. I would be afraid to make it hospitable to snakes and other type critters. I put a few stepping stones in the ground just to make paths so I could get to things: I store plant stakes, empty pots, and other such important but nasty looking stuff under there. The only thing that grows under the deck are a few seeded sweet gum trees and such that grow near the very edge (and the runaway Ruellia that I can't seem to eradicate) but they all stay close to the edges where there's a bit of light. I try to handpull or round them up occasionally. Unless you have some good reason (and I would like to know if there's something we're missing), I would leave well enough alone....See MoreAny ideas for my new deck (see my ugly deck here)
Comments (9)If your looking to not add on and just make it nice, I would: Resurface the cement or cover with some kind of tile mosiac. repair lattice and landscape around it to cover it. Wood if decent I'd restore and reseal, but build new railing wither with metal balusters or bench/planter. I can't see the rest of the yard nor what your budget is so its hard to say. It just looks like it needs some TLC which the above would not cost too much. Me, I went IPE and doubled size to 700 feet and droped a 500 gallon Hot Springs hot tub and had a custom wrought Iron rail made at 100 feet. I started off as a $4000 budget job but grew into a monster of a project long leaving that budget! The imagination is limitless but everyone has a budget! Good luck!...See MoreDeck skirting other than lattice?
Comments (18)Yupers,,,those possums guys move slow and mostly at night but they are stupid and really sneeky, coons now they move at all speeds and they have thumbs they can get into anything. I have a cat door for the Rex Cat here at Butler Manor coons and possums have found their way in a few times, I live trap them with peanut butter, greese and crackers. The possums are just too gross but the coons are right tastie!!! Nice looking Dawgs! I agree that wide wire woudent do much to slow down the critters or the collies. Most of the time the creatures move on what they see, but they dont usually dig or forse into something that dosent look open. Idea>>> Frame in for the skirtng with a solid say...hmmmmm 2x8'' preasure treated as the bottom rail set an inch or so in the ground,2x framing from there up to the deck frame, install the sq lattice framing pannels,I make them out of 1'' stock,or the black chain link, they actually vinal coat that stuff, on the frame in a secure nature. Bang Bang done. Its important for this work to Look very solid and be solid of course, but its the look the creatures go for its all in their eyes unless there is something behind the skirting they want most of the time they wont even think about a force entry. Comments (34)If something like Liriope grows well in your planting zone, you might consider outlining your driveway with it and limit the kinds of landscaping that require a lot of maintenance as those are the ones that can look unnatural -- even cluttered. I've had a few lily of the valley for twenty years and though it spreads beside itself alongside the driveway, I've seen no indication it jumps across the yard and acts as an invasive plant. My mother in law had a circle driveway with lily of the valley and though it increased within that circle, it never jumped the driveway. That said, it is attractive in spring but seems to die back as soon as it gets really hot so you might not want it "front and center" of your yard.....See MoreVaporvac Z6-OhioRiverValley
