Please Help Me With My Living Room Design Problems
Comments (11)Thanks for the thought provoking questions and comments. The door between the kitchen and living room is open most of the time and there is a lot of traffic between the two rooms, so I think that I need to coordinate the color schemes. On second thought, it may be the boldness of the print in the kitchen which I dislike more than the colors. I prefer a softer look. The living room is painted paneling. I wonder how it would look to put up a chair rail in the living room and paint the wall below the chair rail a green, blue or taupe which matches the wallpaper in the kitchen but maybe in a lighter tint? A chair rail might look strange with the vaulted ceilings though. There would be one-third color on the bottom of the wall and two-thirds off-white on the top. Is the chair rail a good idea or do any of you have other suggestions? If I go with green, blue or taupe wall color beneath the chair rail and keep the off-white color above, what color sofa would look good with each color -- green would look good with sofa color? -- blue would look good with sofa color ? etc. When I look at the maple furniture against the off-white walls, I think that has a harsh look. I would like it to look softer, but am just not sure what color would accomplish that. You may be getting the idea by now that I'm color challenged -- LOL The current rug in the room is taupe and burgundy (it does look a bit gray in the picture). I do intend to replace the rug with a much larger rug -- probably 9 X 12. I like the maple furniture because it's what I grew up with. My mother and aunts have this type of furniture in their homes. But, a friend of mine recently suggested that the furniture is a little dated. So, I just wanted some other opinions about whether I should think about replacing this. I was looking for solutions to the fireplace and came across a web site called Brick Anew -- http://www.brick-anew.com/. Any opinions or experience with this product? I like the suggestion of covering over the brick, but it's probably not in my budget right now. Maybe Brick Anew would be a short-term solution and later I can box in the fireplace....See MoreHelp me design my weird living room!
Comments (3)You're not going to need a dining table in here? As always - measure twice, buy once! Have an overall plan before you buy or do anything. Measure to find the center of the window between the bookshelves. Put all seating pieces on furniture coasters, so you can move them around. Put a seven foot couch (or use your single love seat here) five feet away from center of window, facing window. Make sure the couch has thin arm rests. Place an oval coffee table in front of it. (I prefer two small coffee tables instead of one big one so I can move them around, but that's me.) Perpendicular to couch, on either side, place two round swivel chairs. Allow enough room to walk around. Place small round side table next to each chair, on the couch side of chairs. Add wall decor and floor plants/sculpture, if desired. Place accessories on side tables and coffee table. Regarding the approximately 4 1/2' by 8' area left over in front of kitchen, there are a few things you can do with that: craft table, dining table, reading area, mini office. Furniture placement is not permanent. Use your own needs and artistic talent to move them around as desired....See MorePlease help me with design of living room / dining room
Comments (3)Will you be keeping dining table and couches for a while, as you mentioned you will be replacing? That will dictate suggestions for lighting, etc and even ideas for a better possible layout. https://blog.modsy.com/home-design-tips-guides/layout-guides/living-and-dining-room-layout-designs/ If replacing shortly, if you could provide more details in regards to your taste, needs, and style. Either way, could you provide better pictures of the whole space and what your plans are with the furniture. Repainting, if you go that route, should be the last decision....See MoreModern mid century living room design
Comments (12)Thank you so much, Beverly and decoenthusiast! The house is under renovation so I don’t have access to clean photos but here is some info about the room: It’s north-facing, and you see the room from the front entrance (front door is south facing). The back wall is an outside wall to the backyard and there is a fireplace and a ledge along a giant window, so there is really only 1 wall in the living room & that’s where the piano goes. This sitting/living room is half of a great room that also has our “formal” dining room—it has a 96” cherry live edge table & 8 walnut Knoll Nakashima chairs. The table is perpendicular to the backyard, with a big sliding glass door. The fireplace is in between the sliding door and the big window. Behind the table, against a wall that faces the piano wall, is a walnut sideboard that we are keeping. There is a light fixture over the table that is also staying. Thinking that the sofa will go parallel to the dining table and piano, (perpendicular to the windows & fireplace) and hoping to squeeze the a mid century style recliner (black leather & walnut) between the window & the piano, & 1 or 2 swivel chairs facing the backyard window. The space for the just the living portion is 10 feet wide (the wall against which the piano goes) by 13.5 feet long. The dining room opens to the kitchen which is getting redone. Oak floors will continue & we’ll have a walnut floor to ceiling cabinet along the wall that is the kitchen side of the foyer. The kitchen faces south & has 2 big windows to the front yard…dishwasher, sink, lower cabinets along the window wall in SW Gale Force (a dark navy w hint of teal). In the kitchen next to the walnut cab we’ll have an oval (37x60”) walnut table w black iron cylinder base. Chairs tbd. Cabinets around the rest of the room all same navy. Island (60x70”) will be in the middle between kitchen & dining space. Will have 3 barstools. Cooktop in island. Counters are Yosemite Falls Quartzite....See Morejlsch
