Main House Beams-What do you have? Metal or Composite
Comments (12)Steel is incredibly stiffer as well as stronger in bending & shear compared to wood of any kind. Also steel beam I shapes are more efficient than rectangular wood shapes. So, you will often want to use steel when size matters. The best material for short lightly loaded spans is usually determined by the material/fabrication cost and ease of installation rather than the structural characteristics of the material. Long and/or heavily loaded conditions can be spanned by smaller steel beams or larger wood beams. Obviously, wood beams would reach their practical limit in size well before steel beams. Often the choice of structural materials is determined by the design and configuration of the house especially if it has a ducted HVAC system. There are no simple rules of thumb for selecting wood vs steel....See MoreCeiling beams...what do you do in the other rooms?
Comments (11)ll, My home isn't complete yet so it's still a little "raw" if you will. Here is a photo of the kitchen from the family room. I used reclaimed beams so the cost was too much to place the beams on all of the ceilings. dekeoboe is correct in that if you can use load bearing beams it would be best....See MoreWhat did you do with the obtrusive beam running across your kitch
Comments (27)Our renovation could have resulted in such a beam... Instead, we are recessing it. An architect or ngineer can tell you whether or not it is possible in your case. In our case, we are removing a load bearing wall and putting in a steel I-beam, the sides of which will be packed in wood. The floor joists above will all be cut (after being shored up, of course!). Then the beam is installed, and the joists are attached to the wood packing with joist hangers. The beam itself just fits in the ceiling, supported at either end by columns (hidden in other walls). A conversation with an architect is free. We had 2 guys who basically told us what the design would be while gathering info to bud on the job. That unfo was sufficient to get budgetary proposals from contractors... So getting a ballpark estimate us pretty much free. YMMV, of course....See MoreWhat to do on this 8ft slider..what would you do???
Comments (3)I have an 8 foot slider just like this, facing the west. I have a pole rod with fabric panels at both ends and heavily-textured semi sheers in the middle. The rods extend just a bit beyond the doors on the sides so I can push everything out of the way if I want, or pull them all closed in the afternoon to shut out the sun....See MoreSara Casey
