Comments (5)Although I am not brave enough to do something so permanent and daring- I LOVE it! We went to a Homearama this past weekend and the first floors would be safer with color choices but when entering the basements, I would catch myself saying, "Wow, that's unexpected!" Unexpected meaning that it didn't match the style of the rest of the house, kind of like a retreat I guess. I say if you really love it, "Go for it!"...See Morex post $ of digging out basement Phila.
Comments (2)Its a fairly common thing to dig out basements here, and what is often done is to not dig out the entire width or length of the building but rather leave a perimeter of undisturbed (relatively, I guess) soil around the foundation and dig out the middle Then it ends up having a shelf of sorts around the whole thing that is concreted. You are right, though, it may not be possible or advisable depending upon the situation. I know someone who has two adjoined houses and they dug out one basement and essentially filled the other one in. Two adjacent foundations, two different scenarios. They couldn't give me an idea about the price since it was bundled into a whole gut renovation....See MoreFootings for Jack Posts in Basement?
Comments (5)It all depends on why you are jacking the floor joists. If it's just to take out a sag, and there's no load from a wall etc above, then a couple of 2 x 12's on flat are fine. Same holds for the permanent columns, if they are only carrying the weight of the floor above plus the live load and the new beam, there is no way they would ever punch through the existing slab, unless it is unrealistically thin. A cool way to take sag out of floor joists is to jack them straight and screw steel strips along the bottom edge, which is in tension when the beam (joist) is loaded. The load would then have to stretch the steel or shear the fasteners in order to deflect the joist. You could do every other joist....See MoreWhat do I do with the short wall above my basement stairwell?
Comments (23)I was intrigued by the stepped wall on the far side of the stairs, tried painting it different shades of gray to emphasize the different planes. Then one thing led to another, inspired by your unique and carefully curated chair/table/frames. Could a pair of comfortable chairs sit in the "thin strip of usable space" in the center of the room, with traffic flowing on either side of them? Nice place for coffee and chat, perhaps? (Just a note: if I were to re-do this editing, I would set the existing chair flat against the wall rather than angled.)...See Morebeesneeds
