faux shutters and exterior update
Comments (4)I guess my question should be, if we remove the shutters what should we add to the house to not make it look like a boring beige block? I planned on doing a major overhall on the flower beds, planting clematis near the columns of the front porch to add some depth and color. We found a nice navy color that we liked with the beige siding for the shutters (although we still aren't in love with the beige)....See Moreexterior front is boring. new color? faux shutters?
Comments (8)I'm not a decorator, and of course everyone's taste is different, but I have to say that IMO the best thing you can do with that entryway is demolish it. I don't say that lightly. I'm not generally in favor of major changes to a house's design. I think that architects usually know what they're doing, and we ought to respect their creations. But this entryway might be an exception. To me, it seems out of proportion and stylistically incompatible with the house, like a tornado lifted it from somebody's feature-encrusted mcmansion and dropped it there. It breaks up the house's sense of width and sweep, so the house looks awkward and cramped. I'm trying to think of a painting strategy or something that would minimize it, and I can't come up with anything. Maybe someone else can. One thing I would do, though, is shut off that light. Rip out the switch. It really calls attention to the entryway, and not in a good way. I don't mean to offend anyone with this comment. Houses are all about personal taste, and there are lots of people who I'm sure will disagree with me. There are no right and wrong answers to these questions, only those that make you happy with the house you live in....See MoreNeed exterior help/paint faux brick exterior?
Comments (15)I'm usually not one to criticize here on Houzz so let me get this over with now...your house is both a color and architectural disaster. I'm not a fan of the current color...it is not a very pleasant color and is dated, as well. As it is the primary color, I'd start with changing it, then selecting a color for the brick. I'm wondering if you might be OK with the brick in its current state if the other siding is a different color. I am with your husband when it comes to whitewashing brick...it has its place - usually on much older structures - but I don't see it working well with your house. Would the same paint color on the brick and garage door work? The white garage door claims too much attention and shouldn't (it is nearly the home's focal point)...it is just another garage door and nothing special to look at. The white windows are doing a bit of the same thing...calling attention to themselves even though the bay window is a totally different style than the upper-floor windows. You have endless new subdivisions being constructed in Southern California...pay a visit to some of those to check out the current trends in color....See MoreHow to match exterior paint to existing rock facade or recolor rock?
Comments (9)yes, like Katie mentioned, Romabio. Classico. they have different shades of white and beige you could use. you could even mix the colors. it's all natural. same type of stone and it was done on this fireplace. in the white. looks really good. you'd make sure you got the mortar joints to lighten those up along w/the rock. All of the stone and brick were done in the same white romabio color, and light gray for an accent. super easy Only takes 1-2 coats. AND< if you don't like it, it washes off within the first 72 hours would look something like this I'd prob lime wash the stone in a nice white, do a nice white stucco, and then do the fascia in trim in a contrasting color like Iron Ore or Peppercorn. Then I'd do the garage door in a medium gray or the dark Iron ore shade. You'd end up w/something like this: (minus the spiders) want the grays? try these: I love this color palette. Do the white or cream, and bring in the Iron Ore for all of the trim and garage door. try and add some cedar or redwood somewhere If you don't want the white, you can get the Romabio masonry paint and have it tinted to any color. Then you could do this warm gray palette and use the rust color for the door...See MoreEms Mom
