Please help with replacing interior doors!
Comments (15)Well, I won't say that I love my flat 50-yr-old hollow doors but I've made them tolerable by painting. For all the reasons listed above, and mainly because I'm able to paint it myself, rather than wait for you-know-who, I have painted mine. BUT, not just white to match the existing trim--they just looked SO stark and well, plain. In my living area, my walls are painted BM Truffle which is a sort of latte color. Trim is white & I painted the doors a dark chocolate brown (BM Kona). It's a really nice contrast beside the lighter brown walls and the white trim sets it off nicely. Of course I would LOVE the paneled doors, but this is a 100% improvement over the ugly wood stain that they were before. Another idea I saw is creating a paneled door yourself by gluing picture frame moulding onto the door to create the panels. Since I don't have a miter saw, I didn't try that but it really transformed the door for very little money....See MoreNeed decision soon interior doors - what type of wood?

Comments (21)People often forget (and some never knew), that garage doors are often the single largest architectural element on the façade of a house. When there are more than a single car garage door, the dominance is usually overwhelming. Compare the image of a house with 2-3-4 or more garage doors visible from the street with older houses which had an alley and the garage behind the house. Which of the two houses looks more appealing and retains its inviting residential image longer over time? So...add to the size, scale and proportion of the garage door(s) the façade in which the garage doors are located, and you usually have a scale buster (architectural jargon) on your hands! It's one of the primary reasons many professionals on this forum advise against having the garage doors visible from the front of the house, especially if they project forward of the rest of the house and create the dreaded "snout garage"....See MorePlease Help - Decision on Pocket Door Pulls
Comments (5)Thanks for the picture dyhgarden! Wondering what pulls you used on the sides? By the way, your bathroom in the background looks heavenly! I've done some reading on the soft close/open feature on my pocket doors (Johnson) and it appears that the soft close feature also works to keep doors tightly closed. So I don't think I will need a magnetic latch of any kind to keep it firmly closed. That saves about $100 off the Cavilock option pictured above, but its still a l lot more than the back to back pulls would be. Meeting with my contractor tomorrow. The first time I brought up the back to back pull idea, both my contractor and DH thought that would make the side panels uneven, but I don't see how that affects the look of the door when it's fully closed. I'm not the type can can visualize things in my head, so I ordered the back to back pulls and will see how they look. Since they only need a few holes to install, I figure I could always change them later to a recessed pull of some sort, except for the fact that the soft open mechanism/back stop would need to be moved and that would require the walls to be open. I hate being so indecisive!...See MoreDianne
