Exterior Makeover

Comments (16)You could also replace the lattice (which doesn't suit the house style) with a wood, "fencing" style - ie horizontal or vertical, narrow planks. If stone doesn't work out for some reason. I would stain the steps, that wood replacement, and any wood front door a darker brown than the orange-y roof, or a grey-brown that is compatible with the roof, or a darker version of whatever you put on the body of the house. Use the same color on your trim around the windows and doors. My goal is to reduce the visual impact of the large orange-y roof by bringing complementary but not matching colors. Of course, you might like the roof color - I just don't, but I have seen good use of colors that work well with it. If you decide to address the stucco, I suggest that you choose a lighter color for the house, and a darker shade for the huge garage - to make the house stand out more, and the garage visually recede a bit. Two nice planting areas that follows the curves of the driveway approaches to the garages, will also reduce the visual impact of the garages. Plant it with a mix of smaller/lower perennials and evergreens where it is more in front of the house, and add a few taller shrubs (not any that will get too big or require a lot of pruning to keep in check) and/or small trees - maybe even a dwarf fruit tree if you'd like - in front of the garages. That will also help to balance out the large tree there. It's a beautiful specimen but hides most of the house....See Moreexterior makeover help
Comments (5)The concrete planter around your tree is an interesting (and assumedly original?) feature, but nothing else in your landscape “talks” to it so to speak. With midcentury homes I think ‘poured-in-place’ concrete always looks good— it’s not that different from your paver idea, just at a more appropriate scale & function. Here’s a really bad rendering done with a fat thumb on my phone, but the gist would be to have larger rectangular concrete sections (could be gravel or grass in between) that abut your concrete planter, and having those surrounded by some nice native grasses with a another planted section in the middle, and then echo those same plants in your raised concrete planter around tree). Neat house!...See Moreexterior makeover
Comments (9)We plan on getting rid of the shutters. Agree they’re undersized. Flo- I think you’re right there may have been a balcony on the left side. Don’t think there was one on the right side. I really like the door+portico you put in but I’m afraid the dimensions and floor plan might not work. I don’t have an entryway. The house is a converted duplex. The front door opens immediately into a interior stairwell. The bottom and upper layouts are identical around the stairwell (kinda like an h). The front porch is 6.5’ wide. The below is the interior view behind the weird corrugated whatever on the left upper story. You can see there’s some kind of pop-out. No such corresponding pop-out on the other side of the house. On our to do is to talk to a mason. I don’t believe I can redo the surround around the door without having to rebrick. The siding near the roofline looks like older wood to me. I thought painting everything one color might help unify the look but we should investigate what’s behind these bits of siding. Really appreciate all the input!...See MoreDenita
