Butler Stone - Med Gray, Dark Gray, Charcoal, Cream, Yellow, Dark Rust, Mica

We own a 1947 Cottage in Maryland. The exterior is 98% Butler stone (see above) which is now very difficult to find. You can even see a bit of the mica. It has become necessary to build a garage. A similar exterior would be very expensive. One suggestion is placing stone along the bottom third of the structure, but we worry it would look out of place. Using a “similar” stone would look off. The Nichiha Sierra Savannah Smooth could be a good option. About the garage what color for the siding? Stone ideas anybody? https://www.nichiha.com/docs/Nichiha_SierraSavannah_Brochure_18_Q1.pdf

judfor1, what county are you in? I'm in Carroll. We have a lot of those garage additions which do not harmonize with the original brick or stone home (so much Butler stone around here!) The most successful additions have all the same roof color and similar features (windows, etc.) and a siding that is painted a color found in the stone. I like the suggestion of weathered gray. But otherwise, I would plan on Hardi and painting it a complementary color to the stone. I wouldn't worry about adding Butler stone to the garage.

The only window that looks out of place to me is the large window on the right--it leans to MCM. If that is on the list of changes to be made, all the better. I like the 4 over 4 windows you have, it suits what I see in the older parts of Maryland.

Classic door styles should be on the list as well--maybe even a Dutch-door.

I would get all new windows with no grids and choose a color from the stone for the garage doors It owuld be helpful to see where you are planning the garage and some major landscaping is in order. No idea about the pics you posted none of those are even close to your house .

There’s nothing wrong with a garage addition looking like a garage addition. You tie it together with color, roofing, and the same windows.

Go to one of the paint visualizer websites (Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams or anyone else) and upload a front facing photo. "Paint" the door the same color as the trim in your visualizer and you will see that door will dominate the entire house. Usually that is the last thing we want to pop out. Landscaping is cheaper and looks better. I would do that and paint the front door until you can paint the body of your home the color you want it to be.

We have a house in the family we are considering that has the same weird front door on the side arrangement and garage door in front (city lot, no other place for a garage) and our plan if we redo the house is a garage door that blends with the house and then spruce up the front and the walkway to the front as much as possible. (We are wondering even about putting some kind of porch over the front door so that there is some front-facing structure that can say ‘hello, front door here!’ but we haven’t quite decided what form that would take yet.) Otherwise people see the garage door and get confused about a lack of front door.

We are getting ready to paint our house. ranch garage larger than house you can't see it but there is actually a large breezeway between the house and garage trim around windows and doors in house section (new) no-maintenance white we are keeping and don't want to paint high trim on garage is dark brown and we would rather not paint it, but can paint the lower dark brown trim on the garage house is T-111 textured siding and garage is metal We like yellow, blues, greys, fun vibrant greens. Are you replacing your existing roof or just adding on the garage and extending the current roof over the garage. Will the garage be attached to the house? I like your brick and your roof color. The front door should be a different color to draw attention to the front door and away from your future garage door. A wood or wood look garage door would look wonderful on your brick home. If you need to go with a different material, then a color that blends with your siding/brick would be best IMO. If you go with high contrast color for your garage door it draws all the attention to your garage rather than your lovely home. Looking at colors that work for your front door, try one of the accent colors below. I think the goldenrod or basil or meadow would look terrific on your front door. JMO

Patricia Colwell Consulting The windows are as important to the style of the home as the stonework. Perhaps you have it confused with a more modern home. We are in the process of installing exterior French drains around the homes perimeter which necessitated the removal of the existing bushes. The top picture is a true representation of the stone on the house.

judfor1, you own an absolutely an adorable house…what if the garage siding were applied vertically and you let it weather out? Love this photo for inspiration. The only change I would make is to paint the window trim the same as the house trim.

JudyG Designs Our list is long, and new doors, and painting the trim, and … are on the list. Yes, I have been thinking hard about the window colors, but the garage really manages to occupy my mind a lot.

I do nort see anything particular that requires those windows that BTW look like they all need replacing adn indeed all the stone work on the entry

What a great house! Beautiful stone! I think my cousin has something similar - she's in PA - beautiful metalic like flecks in it...

My thought is don't try to match any stonework - it won't match and will stand out like a sore thumb - like mixing new brick with old brick. Looks like on the side you have a bit of cedar shake siding. I think that would look great on a garage! It weathers great with no upkeep, and over time will look that much more like it's been in place a very long time.

Are you going to keep the garage separate from the house? I think that would look better. Or connect it with a breezeway,,,,

While I am not a professional and I know this is not the usual, but I would pick out a dark grown tone from the stone and use it as a trim color, instead of gray. There are so many grays all ready. Love your home!

Anna (6B/7A in MD) I live in Baltimore County just 5 miles this side of Harford County. The photo makes it look odd. That section of the house is the original garage. Not sure how they managed to get a car into it. We plan to make the window into french doors, and block the door just to the side with the exception of a small decorative window.
