What is too much space between kitchen Island and counters?
Comments (11)dawnk, you were right. Thank you! I just went to the house to map everything out and confirmed this. hollysprings - I am ok with the 39.5 inches between the sink counter and the island. My main concern was the other side. You were also right about the pinch point between the fridge and the island. That measures to be 39" and we are ok with that. GauchoGordo1993 - the fridge landing is something. It is a french door refrigerator and it is a monster. After playing around with the design a lot we could not find a better spot for it. We currently have no refrigerator landing so this will be a step up for us. Thank you everyone for all your help!...See Morecalling all pros!!! is 30' too narrow for a kitchen island???
Comments (14)Here are more pics of a narrow island. I love this idea, of the skinny island. Think of it--it's essentially a galley kitchen w/ no upper wall on one side. It would still be very useful. Aptosca's comments about hers: So far I love the island the best. I never had one before. We got reduced size cabinets (18"W) so I could have an island. The island measurements are 21"W x 75.5"L. I know that sounds small on paper, but it is a great workspace. I use it constantly. I store all my appliances underneath and it will be my prep area. I do love the red garnet in the VB granite too. When the sun from the skylights fall on the island it sparkles. I love it! I think the 8-feet part would be hard. I'd be tempted to break it into two islands, so I didn't have to walk around it every time. Comments (96)This is the kitchen that has been in my brain for at least 10 years, and here you have gone and done it perfectly!!! I'm going to Pinterest the bejebbers out of it as inspiration photos for the coming renovations (as soon as I finish all these pesty bathrooms!). Seriously, I have wanted a 4 oven Aga plus a module for ages. I already have the full 601 fridge & freezer (so a little bigger than your Subzero.) And I plan to put a big barrel hood over it all. And you have a big island with not huge aisles! And you have soapstone! I really think we're channeling the same frequencies. I'm totally in love with your butler's pantry! We didn't inherit one, but I may use the cabinet sliding door idea for the walk-thru pantry I'm planning. It solves my problem of a tight space and not really wanting all open shelves! Ok, I'm off to study this kitchen more deeply! Truly, I know this reveal is several years past now, but wow just the same! Great job! Always ;-) Hunzi...See MoreIs my island workable or too big for kitchen scale?
Comments (17)cooki1268: It's from AYA kitchens 2009 winter catalog/magazine. Here's the link, but it's a huge pdf. I think it's page 12. We're not going with their cabinets, but I did love that picture (gotta find those stools!) www.ayakitchens.com/media/.../AyA_Inspired%20Design2_sm.pdf Thanks to all the other smart and objective advice givers! I'll show my current floor plan, which will help you all see where the doors lead to: We added the wall and opened up the basement stairs to close off the family room from the front door. We also changed the sliding glass door into a picture window and added the side garden door. We face west so we get a ton of light from the back windows and garden door. There's also a silly 40" raised breakfast bar behind the D/W. To answer some of florantha's questions: you can see my current kitchen layout does curve into a "U." I was trying to limit that for 2 reasons: not going to invest in a CD fridge and hate to see the fridge sticking out into the kitchen. As well, also dislike that dead corner between the fridge and stove. One cook household, and we do eat at home most of the time. Two kids that like to help with baking. I was trying not to move walls, windows, sink, etc., simply to put my money into cabs and counters. Need seating for 4 regularly, but have a large dining room table for bigger dinners....See Morecpartist
