Decision Time: Asst Living or Nursing Home?
Comments (5)Another good article. I always cringe when I hear someone say they've promised their parent that they will never place them in a nursing home. None of us knows the future. We have no idea how our loved one's health or mental abilities will deteriorate. It's unfair to the loved one and unfair to yourself to make a promise you simply may not be able to keep. My mother lived in two assisted living situations, but eventually she needed to move into a memory care unit. What the article says about staff numbers and incontinence care is true. As my mother's dementia progressed, she withdrew more and more from the planned activities. So she ended up spending most of her day napping or sitting in her apartment alone. However, once she moved to memory care, she enjoyed a day full of various activities. That was because the staff to resident ratio was better. The staff got everyone up & dressed and herded off to breakfast. Then they were ushered into the great room for activities. They never spent hours alone. All that to say that promising to keep a loved one out of nursing homes or dementia wards may not actually be in their best interests....See MoreDecision time! Very dark hardwood?
Comments (6)Let me know how it all works out....I am interested to see if other dark floors show the footprints. I cannot believe how much it bothers me. I have an open concept style of house with alot of windows so we get all kinds of light from the north, south and west. Come to think of it that is very interesting....when we get alot of southern exposure with the blinds up I notice the dust alot more. Dust is not the issue for me though as it is an easy and quick dry mop to solve. My issue is the footprints that make the floor look dirty...it is unfortunate as they show alot at night when the lights are on in the house. If you can let me know how your floors turn out about a month after install....See MoreFirst Time Home Buyer - Help With Floor plan Decisions!
Comments (27)I personally like the separated dining area, which could be anything you want, and don’t Mind the basement laundry as I’ve never had anything else, plus it’s nice to have the rough work space, as someone said, cleaning boots, cleaning pets, soaking a wash, scouring our plant pots etc. Plus if the washing machine leaks it doesn’t Leak into an overhead area. I’m not a fan of having the dining crammed into a sitting area, but on the other hand, a longer living area may be more flexible if let’s say, you have oversized things. I really don’t like kitchens with no natural light as I use a kitchen all throughout the day and people end up in one a lot I find, but the galley style may be cramped, hard to tell....See MoreDecision time for home under contract! Comments (28)@Dianna B We bought/renovated a house near the beach 2 years ago, got all the permits to list it as a vacation rental (this was an ORDEAL, so make sure you look into what it required!), signed a contract with a property management company, got pictures taken and the website set up to list it on all the vacation rental sites, and were ready to go live... on March 5. Yes, that would be March 5, *2020.* :P So, instead of renting it out, we moved our family into it -- since everyone was working/schooling remotely, it was perfect. And every single day, I'm grateful for our beautiful kitchen!!!! (The house we rent where we 'live' is a tiny homage to the 70s, in all the bad senses of the term homage. The greenish-yellow counters, the inability to open the fridge and the oven at the same time, the lack of a functional venting system... well; at least it's very space-efficient! haha) So yes, to @Michelle Maurice's point: you never know how you will use your vacation house. :D...See Morelatifolia
