Midcentury kitchen restoration; help with backsplash and floors

We are restoring a midcentury modern house that has not been touched since 1952. We know a lot of people will see this kitchen and be of the "rip out the cabinets, paint everything white" camp. However that is not what we are going for here.

We actually really like the overabundance of natural materials, including the redwood paneling and the funky 1950's whitewashed cabinets with brass pulls. We replaced the damaged the countertops with matte black granite, because it goes with the period of the house, and a white countertop would have made the whitewashed cabinets look dingy. We plan on replacing the appliances and on using lighting to reduce some of the darkness of the kitchen.

We are looking for advice about what to do for a backsplash, and for the flooring. We feel like the cabinets themselves provide enough "business" so we are thinking of something minimal. Thoughts would be appreciated.
