Back to the initial question: Just speculating on the age, there appears to be 13 or 14 growth "rings", each represents a new leaf - so depending on how quickly it grows, say 3-4 leaves per year in a decent environment, or 5-6 if growing conditions are perfect, you can guess that the plant is maybe about 3-4 years old from the time the trunk begins to form, I think it takes about 2 years to begin forming a trunk so my guess is this bottle is about 6 years old, +/- 18 months. I acquired a bottle palm in early June, a new spear was just starting to show. I repotted the plant, and despite the transplant shock that new frond is now opening up, it grows about an inch a day, more or less. I water it generously, 4 times a day if I'm home. They like lots of water.

Bottle is straight-sided, about 3" in diameter, and a little over 10" tall. Tho not an "expert", I'm comfortable saying it's OLD for real and not just made to look old. On 2 sides of the "shoulder" (just below the start of the neck)... raised letters "MOXIE", in a slight curve. On body of bottle againi "MOXIE" in a straight line... on one side (in smaller raised letters) something about patent.

Thanks for the library idea. I've been following ebay for a year now and have never seen a bottle like this one. I've also looked at a couple of bottle guides in bookstores, but have never found this bottle....because it's not American and the books only cover American. The only lead I found was through a Scottish auction house ...a full bottle of this Chivas auctioned for thousands of $$. I'd only be dreaming to think that my empty is worth even a small fraction of that! Any other ideas will be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Carter's inks came in that particular style (referred to as ring shoulder cone) from the 1870s until about 1920. So, it's not that new. You can date it, not by whether the rim was applied or molded in, but by what kind of stopper would have appeared in the bottle. This is not a screw top, and Carter went to screw lids around 1920. It was corked. That shape was used Jaynboro, because it was hard to tip when you filled or dipped a pen. If you look at drinking vessels used on ships, you would also see the conical design for the same reason. Even though older than Linda suggested, it still isn't big $..........going rate on someplace like ebay is around ten dollars. But, it's cute.
