Driveway Entry (X-post)
Comments (7)I want to thank you all for your sage counsel! I am currently waiting to hear from the Fed Ex insurance appraiser. You are correct, NHBabs. We had snowfall twice last year that reached the top of the wall or higher, as well as lesser amounts and ice storms that really do require a wall, fence, or structure of some type to alert guests to the culvert. Kitasei, I LOVE the idea of a “tumbled pillar” and if only I lived in the right type of home and neighborhood, that’s just what I’d do! The shrub is actually not a shrub (bad photo angle); it is two large evergreen shrubs and six large burning bushes encircling our outdoor electrical boxes where they do a fabulous job of camouflaging the boxes. We have landscapers come in the spring and fall (what we can afford) and they do a good job keeping them from encroaching on the driveway. I agree the boxwoods need to go. Littlebug, The house does have the same brick on it as the mailbox and wall on the driveway entry. What would you suggest we use? Or should we just try to get a close match? I don’t know about the driveway flare, though I wish there was one. The house was built in 1991 and we are the second owners. To my knowledge, this is the first time the wall has been hit (and we order online a lot!). So, that said, I have submitted an estimate to Fed Ex for the exact tear down and replacement of what’s there. Our current walls also have lighting in the grating as you can see in the photos below. If you have any ideas to make it more appealing while working with a fairly deep culvert to give our entry more style, I’d love to see them. Visual examples would be helpful, since unfortunately, I don’t have a design bone in my body!! Thank you again!!...See Morelandscape design-driveway/entry
Comments (18)Well, you have some gorgeous plants there. Just make sure that the way you plant them you leave room enough for them to spread to their mature size. You really have way more than you need, you can make the area bigger. Also, make sure you don't obstruct your view pulling out of your driveway. Same thing, consider their mature height when planting. The plants may be small now and not obstruct your view, but in three years it could be a whole different story....See MoreDriveway dimension - side entry garage
Comments (20)Several thoughts: - Are you doing concrete all the way to the road? Around here, people who aren't in neighborhoods /aren't building short driveways tend to have gravel for the majority of the driveway ... then it become concrete maybe 15-20' from the garage opening. The house I grew up in, for example, sat about six acres off the road -- no way anyone would pour concrete /maintain concrete (because dirt will wash out under a drive /the drive will crack) for that length. The house I'm building will sit even farther off the road ... so we certainly will use gravel (the good gravel) for the majority of the driveway. - Have you thought this through from a guest point of view? Side garages are tough in this regard. Imagine you're a guest approaching the house -- you pull up to the end of the drive /next to the garage. Where should you enter? Through the garage probably isn't a choice, but you can't see the front door from where you are. I don't think people tend to put enough thought into the drive /guest arrival. Lots of good choices exist, but you have to think it thought for your own plan. It is better to be a little too big rather than a little too small. Except for the budget, and the OP's said that's a concern....See Moreunbalanced entry
Comments (8)If you're planning to go ahead changing your porch/portico, consider creating a wider porch floor with a totally new roof supported by posts that have a more "balanced" visual. You have numerous options depending upon how much you might want to enlarge your front porch, including but not limited to: * You could create a porch the full width of your home with a shed roof beginning just below the upstairs windows and only add a small gable within the shed roof over the front entry door. My personal preference would be hip corners for each side of the porch roof. https://www.flickr.com/photos/frontporchideas/12329191664 * A forward facing gable porch roof could share a center ridge line height with the main house roof ridge line but would be at a right angle to it. You could have the gable roof cover the upstairs window and leave the front of the gable open so the window view is below the porch roof. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/145381894191248234/ * You could use creating a new forward facing gable for the porch to "bump out" -- enlarge -- the room above it so the space above the porch within the gable is included in that room. https://www.thisoldhouse.com/narragansett-ri-idea-house/21019432/in-fine-detail-2018-idea-house-finale * More ideas: https://www.front-porch-ideas-and-more.com/porch-roof-designs.html...See Morewestes Zone 9b California SF Bay
